Creative Cloud searching for updates... still searching

Trying to install Adobe Creative Cloud on my new (Windows 7) notebook. Installed the client (Version 4.7.0.400), then logged in. When trying to install any apps I don't even get to chose them. The client displays that it is searching for an update. This message has remained for hours without anything being found or updated. Also tried installing apps via the web site. There I can chose them for download, but then it also starts the client, and I am stuck again.

So far I've tried to

- shut down any firewall

- disable
