So I have downloaded the adobe app manager so that I cold have the free trials. I opened AI when it was all done to work on a project. I closed out for no longer than 5 min. When i went back to open the app manager, it ifnormed me there were updated needed. I followed along and did the updates. after AI updated, i no longer have the option to click "try" which opens AI. What do I need to do?

Then it is perfectly fine.... AAM is a utility to manage the Download, Licensing, Activation ad update of Adobe Software.

If you have installed the Ai ad also updated it then the job of AAM is almost done,  you don't need it for launching Ai everytime.

Go to "All programs" under Start Menu and open the Illustartor from there, no need to open AAM and then open Illustrator.

I found a way around it, but no - it has not expired. I just downloaded it this evening. on the app manager screen across from AI it jsut says "up to date" instead of "try". I am sunning windows 7
