Question

How to install InDesign CS6 from disk on a Windows 8.1 (64-bit) PC when installation fails after the first initialization of installation program, without error message?

I have a (legally purchased) disc with InDesign CS6 that I want to install on a PC with Windows 8.1 (64-bit). After I've double-clicked the Set-up.exe file on the disc, a box is displayed showing the progress of the initialization of the installation program. When the coloured bar in the box is full – indicating that this step is completed – the installation stops and nothing more happens. No error messages are displayed.

I can't find any useful instructions in the Adobe Help pages more than a note that there is support for also Windows 8.1 even though the system requirements printed on the disc box only lists Windows XP and Windows 7. I don't know how to make this work. Does anybody here have any suggestions? I'd be ever so grateful for any tips.

First thing I would try is running the installer in compatibility mode for Win XP (and run the cleaner tool fisrt to remove all trace of the failed install: CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3

Thanks, I've tried that now against Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and also changed the properties of the Set-up.exe file to match Windows 8. Unfortunately, the result is always the same, regardless whether I've tried to run the program as an administrator or other user: After the initial Bootstrapper application has been run, the installation stops. According to the Microsoft Diagnostics in Windows 8, the Set-up.exe file is an incompatible program. It does say in the Adobe Help documentation that InDesign CS6 also can be run in Windows 8 – although it isn't stated how – so I hope there's another way to approach this. Otherwise our little society with a very limited budget has paid USD 1,100 for a useless product.

Thanks. Another thing, though: Just after you posted your message, I received an e-mail from "Adobe Support Systems", stating that the support team apologized for the inconvenience and that they would contact me via Skype. They promptly did and asked for the serial number, when it was purchased and for how much. I got the explanation that the latest plugins made it necessary to download an upgrade for just USD 400. Adding that they could do me the service of installing and activating InDesign on my PC. At that moment I blocked the contact. It seems I was being framed.
