I have downloaded an update for adobe 10, it will not install saying that another installation is in progress and this needs to complete before installation will start, so I have tried to remove this version of adobe so I can start again and I get the same message telling me that I cant uninstall this version because another installation is in progress, please advise how to get round this.

As kglad said, restart the machine and log on to it with the administrator account so whatever install/ uninstall is running can finish properly before attempting anything else. Otherwise you can always terminate the other process.

hopefully you didn't partially uninstall anything.

restart your computer.  before doing anything else update acrobat 10.

if you see an error message again, attach a screenshot of the error message.
