Installing Photoshop Elements 10 as an upgrade

I recenlty purchased Photoshop Elements 10 as an upgrade to an older version. It is plainly stated on the box that "you will need a licensed copy of any version of Adobe Photoshop Elements." Somewhere on the Internet I saw that it would be necessary to have your old registration number.  The upgrade version is $20 cheaper than the new version.

When I installed the upgrade, nowhere did it ask for my old registration number.

So my first question is did I get the full version of Photoshop Elements 10?

My second question is why the difference in price between these two versions if an older registration number is not necessary to install the program?

Tech support was no hope with these questions.

Thank you.

Carole

    Hi,

The upgrade installer will first check for a qualifying previous version installed on the computer. If it is able to detect one, it will not ask you for the old serial number.

Installing an upgrade will install the full version of the software.

I would recommend that you launch the product to verify if installation has been completed successfully.

    Hope this answers your question.

    Hi -

    Thanks for you reply.

As I was installing the new version of Photoshop to a new computer, which had never seen any version of Photoshop before, there is no way a previous version could be detected.

I checked the Adobe site and my previous product was not registered there.

Something just is not right here. Why would someone spend $20 more for the "new" version if the same thing can be had with the upgrade? When I asked tech support about this, I was just blown off.

    Hi Carole,

Upgrade pricing is only provided to those who own a qualifying previous version. That is why upgrade pricing is less compared to buying a full version.

The upgrade version of the software contains all the features as in a full version and you will not lose out on functionality.

The upgrade installer is designed to be able to detect previous versions in order to validate ownership. In case it cannot, that is when the serial number can be used to validate ownership.

It is strange that you were able to install the product on a new computer without being asked for a serial number.

Also, did you launch the software to check if installation has been successful?

Well, I think it strange that Adobe doesn’t care if I had a previous version. It sounds like a rip off to me, not for me but for the guy who pays the full price. . And tech support could have cared less.

And, yes, it works, but what a shock! Not at all user friendly like the previous version I have.

    Thanks for your reply.
