Did you register your Adobe products online?  If yes, there may be a record of your old CS serial numbers online.  Log-in below.

Clean and legal installs of either CS4 or CS5 should still work and be able to be activated. And it's true that CS upgrade versions don't require the prior release that they depend on to actually be installed on the system.

However, in no circumstance can any CS upgrade version be installed without at least knowing or having available the serial number of the prior version which it was upgraded from.

One thing you can do is check your online Adobe account to see if there's any record there of your prior version purchase(s). Please follow the steps described here:

Hope that helps.

No need to install CS4 though. I think the end game here is to get CS5 installed.

CS5 may be able to be installed as standalone using a CS4 upgrade number.

Assuming these are all for Mac or all for Windows, try

  1. Install the CS5 upgrade version (don't worry about installing CS4),
  2. Enter your CS5 upgrade serial number,
  3. When prompted to enter a SN from an earlier qualifying version, enter your CS4 upgrade serial number.

That used to work for me.

Not keeping track of the serial numbers you have purchased is about the same as laying money on an outdoor table and letting the wind blow it away

There is no way that anyone in a public forum can help with a serial number that you did not record and safeguard
