My computer has just updated all my programs to 2020 versions but left the 2019 ones there, which is damn annoying. Worse, when I uninstall them the files I have are no longer attached to right program so I have tell the computer to open .indd with InDesign 2020.
This has happened with other updates too - is this just something sent to annoy me or is there a setting that will make it happen as it should.

There is an option in the CC Desktopp App to remove old versions when installing new ones.
You can also change the default application of a file type:

Hi, I am having the same issues and cannot open any indesign files from 2019 in 2020. Have you had any luck with an answer?

Didn't you see Peru Bob's answer?
Try this first: Open Id 2020 and open your file from within Id (File->open). Does that work?
I suspect that the link from the extension (indd) to Indesign is broken or the OS still opens Id 2019 when clicking the file. As that is an OS functionality, you need to look into the help or the fora of your OS (Microsoft Windows or MacOS).
If you want further advice, please state your OS and version so that the help will get more precise.
