Why won't installer accept my serial number?

When I bought CS5.5 I was promised a free upgrade to CS 6. After downloading and going through installation it says I have an invalid serial number. I have checked and rechecked and it is correct. Why is it not recognized?

you need a cs6 serial number to install cs6 products.

Generally, when you purchase software, you get the updates free but purchase upgrades to new versions.
