Question

OT Client has existing database, needs update

Hi

Sorry, this is slightly off topic. I am quite new to application development but have done a few projects with Access and I am comfortable with that but what happens when I get a client who has an existing website with a database that is not Access, maybe MySQL or some other and it has 1000 records on it which they wish to retain for a new website?

I know the obvious answer would be to learn about the new database but if not, would it be a case of re-inputing the records into the Access database or is there a conversion program or any other ideas? I'm sure web developers get this alot.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

While Access has its limitations, it might be fine for a small web database
of 1000 or so records.

I assume your hypothetical question is referring to a real world project.

If so, can you offer some specific details such as what database the current
records are in fact stored in? ("maybe MySql"? or is it definitely MySql?).

Where will the site be hosted?

Migration tools do exist but you'll get much better answers if you provide
some accurate details of what you're attempting to do.

Thanks Dooza

The book sounds like a great idea and I will be doing that.

Hi John

Thanks for your reply. Although my question was hypothetical and was generalising, I do have a project coming in next month so it does apply to the real world. After saying that though, I'm not sure what database they are currently using, I just used MySql as an example as I understand it is a popular choice in online databasing. Now I know there are migration tools out there from your replies, I will probably post again when I get the project it.

Thanks again for both of your replies.

Firstly whilst Access does work on the web, its not really up to the
job, its performance is severely limited. You would do yourself a big
favour by learning a little bit more about other databases.

You can move data from one database to another, just export it from one
and import it into the other.

Database's that are on servers are administered using software you
install on your PC or via a web page. You can even administer MSSQL via
Access as a project.

Grab yourself SAMS Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, it got me started
and will get your going.
