Slow typing in DW CS6 / OSX?

Explorer ,
May 09, 2012 May 09, 2012

Is anybody experiencing really slow typing in DW CS6 on a Mac?

Regardless of what I type, the code only apears at a rate of 3 characters per second!  Does anybody know what may be causing this?  Is it an incompatability, a bug, or some rendering issue???

I'm running this on an old MacPro1,1 / NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB with 8GB Ram, SSD drives OSX Lion 10.7.3.

This slow behaviour is not noticed on other CS6 apps...

The purchased product was an upgrade - downloaded from Adobe:

Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium (Mac,English)

Looking forward to a resolution, as it's pretty terrible.

Luis.

If you have installed Dreamweaver CCM update (12.1), you should no longer face this issue. If you have 6.1 update installed and are still facing this problem, let us know. For users that are not on the cloud, Adobe is working towards a release that addresses this issue.

No joy with the 12.0.3.5861 updater.

Maybe I already had 12.0.3, but the main About box doesn't report the full version.

Get Info now reports 12.0.3.5861

So, can anyone on this forum or at Adobe confirm that these issues are solved in the current CC version? Looking at what's fixed in the current CC version, I see slow typing as an issue that was fixed.

Anyone want to confirm?

Hello All,

I think that Tag Selector is causing this delay when scrolling or typing as I tested and figured out.

Here is a solution with my notes: http://www.zeeshanarshad.com/dreamweaver-slowsdelays-when-typing-or-scrolling

I can't duplicate the issue you discuss in code view. Whether my cursor is in the body or out of it, scrolling is normal.

The problem I'm reporting is in Design view, where clicks, typing, selecting are all very slow.

It's now mid July and my Dreamweaver 12.0 Build 5861 still reports no updates available.

You can get the 12.03 update below:

http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html#dwcs612712

If you're not a Cloud subscriber, that's the last available update.

Thank you for the link to the updater. I'll post after I've tested it. The notes don't say it solves the delays and 95% CPU issue in Design view.

Is your note that it's the last available update for the standalone version official?

I know of no other updates for the perpetual licensed version. If one is sent out later,  it will appear on that page.

I have not experienced the problem you describe.  I think it's a Mac only issue. The  12.03 update contains several bug fixes.

Check out this similar thread.Re: Dreamweaver CC slow typing performance [ awfully slow ]

Here's the setup I'm commenting on in the other thread:

Dreamweaver 2014.1.1 6982

5K retina iMac with a 4G i7, 32 GB RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB, 3T Fusion drive with less than 1 T used. But it looks the same as previously when using Dreamweaver CS 6 on a 2010 27" i7 iMac with 16 GB RAM. No other app on my iMac has any such problem.

Gist:

Any html file long enough to require scrolling is painfully slow to scroll or to edit text in. To be precise, I'm talking about seconds of delay for every action. This happens even in a new, almost empty site with a new, almost empty css and a new DW 2-column template with no changes except to copy and paste some text so it's long enough to require scrolling.

I'd love to find that there's something in my setup I can fix, but this has remained the same since DW CS 5.

Not only that, but Dreamweaver CC crashed twice in a row today while I was editing a Spry menu. After the second crash, I stopped and saved the document every few minutes, and was able to continue.

I believe I've solved the problem with very slow behavior in Design view.

I created a new Test User and opened a problem html file. The file behaved normally, with no slow scrolling or typing.

I copied Dreamweaver CC prefs from that account to my shared folder.

Back in my usual user, I replaced the Dreamweaver CC prefs file with the newly created one.

Yes, this is the simplest, first stop solution to problems one user has when others don't. But I don't see how Dreamweaver CC picked up an old or corrupted prefs file, as I completely uninstalled Dreamweaver CS 6 before installing CC.

It may work just as well to merely delete the Dreamweaver CC prefs when Dreamweaver is not on.

Here's an update for you all: I worked with Adobe yesterday and they took a look at my system exhibiting the problem.

Together we managed to identify that the problem appears to be dependent on the SIZE of your coding window.

Try reducing the size of your coding window to see if the problem is lessened.  It's not really a practical work around, but you can at least make it more bearable until the fix comes.

Tried resizing the window but it doesn't make a bit of difference for me

Reducing the window helped me too. Agree with curtStaubach, though, I have to make the window tiny to get the response back to anything near to usable.

Someone else mentioned Coda 2. I've just downloaded a demo of it and, out of interest, tried it full screen with the same files that are slow in DW. Unsurprisingly Coda 2 whizzed along as fast as I could type.

Coda 2 looks very nice, but DW has jQuery code completition built in now and Coda doesn't appear to (tried a plug-in but not very successfully). So... I'd like to stick with DW (especially having bought it) but only if Adobe can fix the problem.

Exactly the same for me, reducing the size of the coding window helps but I have to make it very tiny (too tiny) to completely get rid of the problem.

Well, the good news is that reducing the size of the code does indeed "fix" the problem. The bad news is that I have to make the code view window so small that the Dreamweaver is again unusable. I guess the positive side of all this is that you guys at least have a better idea of the cause.

I may have found the answer. I was having the same problem with DW CS6 on my Mac PowerBook (2010-mid-year model, 8GB, high-res, running an external Dell 1620x1200 monitor). I turned off all visual aids, related files, etc, with no change. I just turned off "Show Grid." Voilá! No slow typing. No spinning beach ball. I'm ecstatic. I hope this works for you.

Turning off "Show Grid" didn't work for me, either. That's something that applies to design view whereas the slow problem occurs everywhere for me - design view, code view - even scrolling the local files on my disk in DW with no files open is noticeably slower than in any other application.

Glad you're OK though, bunnyslippers!

Hi bunnyslippers - I've never used the grid.  I toggled it on, tried it; then off and tried again.  No change.

I just noticed that I have the slowness problem on a Macbook Pro running DW6.

Previously running DW4 and trial of DW5.5 with no issues.

I do notice the slowness more while editing certain HTML files. The HTML itself is not huge, but the CSS files it links to are large. I tried turning off every feature I could think of.

The issue is definitely persistant with the Windows version as well.

System:

Core i7 2620 @ 2.7GHZ

8GB Ram

ATI Radeon HD 6630M

All power setting configured for maximum performance.

I can run Photoshop 64-Bit without issues and only ever reach about 12-16% CPU usage

Dreamweaver 32-Bit is idling at 25% ... yes, idling.  The second it's launched my fan goes insane.

I find the problem mostly occuring whenever I try to save a file I am working on, or randomly throughout work Dreamweaver will freeze/lag for about 2-20 seconds and "stop respsonding" a-la Windows Task Manager.

I am using the Trial Version of Dreamweaver CS6 on Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium

I noticed the same problem with Dw CS6 on my iMac with Core 2 Duo / 10.7.4 / ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB yesterday when intalled tryout. Slow scrolling and typing (I use just Code view). I don't have the same problem on Core i7 / Win7-x64 PC, but I've noticed Dw CS6 on Win7 PC in idle mode takes 13 or more percent CPU usage. O_o

Also I noticed when I switch between apps to Dw CS6 on 10.7.4, I see dark grey screen for about 1 sec. before I see Dw CS6 window.
