Unable to upload to server

I have been using my DreamWeaver CS4 with my Windows 7 operating system successfully for many years. I recently have been unable to "PUT" or upload edits on my website to the server. Nothing has changed since a month ago when I was successful with this but now I keep getting the error message below (see my responses in ALL CAPS):

An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. No response from the server. This may be due to the following reasons:

  • Accessing server requires firewall settings that aren't properly set (THESE WERE CHECKED AND HAVE NOT CHANGED FROM TIME THEY WERE WORKING) and that the USE FIREWALL option in the SITE definition dialog is selected.(DID THIS)
  • The server may be accepting only passive mode or only active mode. Toggling the Use Passive FTP checkbox may help establish a connection (TRIED THIS)
  • If you are connecting to an IPV6 enabled server, please select Use IPV6 transfer mode checkbox in Advanced site definition dialog (NOT USING THIS)
  • Your local firewall may be blocking the incoming FTP data. Diable to make a difference, (CHECKED AND IS NOT BLOCKING)
  • It is possible that your local FTP may be using a non-standard FTP port (21), To specify a non-standard port, enter port number after the host name separated by a colon (I COULD NOT FIND FTP # IN ADVANCED TAB SO IT IS PROBABLY 21)

None of the trouble-shooting helped. Should I contact my web host? Thanks!

Who is your web host?  I ask because GoDaddy is notorious for resetting passwords and permissions without telling their customers.

Can you cannot with a dedicated FTP client like Filezilla?

FileZilla - The free FTP solution

If not, then you can rule out DW as the problem.  You would need to contact your hosting provider to fix whatever was changed at their end.

Thanks for the tip. It turned out it was 1 and 1 that changed the FTP to SFTP! It's all good again.
