Update 4/16

I'm pleased to announce that Flash Player 13.0.0.201 for Mac is now available from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer.  This release resolves the crash described in this thread.  As noted below, you can either download this immediately from adobe.com or wait for the update to be applied automatically, within 24 hours, via our recommended auto update mechanism.  If you encounter any problems updating, please visit http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html for basic troubleshooting steps.

We are aware that Macs created between 2006 and 2008 are currently running into problems using the latest release of Flash Player (version 13).  We apologize for the inconvenience that this is causing.  We are actively investigating the cause and hope to have a full solution to you shortly.  In the meantime, please follow this two step procedure which will revert you back to version 12.

  1. Download and run our uninstaller:
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg
  2. Download and run the version 12 installer from*:
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac/install_flash_player_12_osx.dmg

After installing Flash Player, you might be presented again with our update dialog.  You have a couple of choices to deal with this.

I recommend simply clicking the red close button on the dialog's title bar to dismiss the dialog.  This dialog will show up once every 7 days or until we update you silently and automatically with the fixed version (45 days maximum).

The other option is to change the notification option during the install to "Never check for updates (not recommended)."  This will suppress the dialog completely.  At some point in the near future Safari will block the old version of Flash Player and you'll be prompted to reinstall the new version of Flash (with the fix).  When that happens you can return to the automatic update selection.

I will continue to update this thread and post to twitter (@liquidate) when new information is available.

Update 4/10:

We have determined that this problem is due to a compiler update in our build infrastructure that exposed a long-standing bug in a Mac system library.  Flash Player now attempts to use CPU instructions that are not available on a subset of supported Mac hardware from 2006 to 2007.  None of the machines in our compatibility labs are affected, so the issue didn't show up in our testing, but we were able to track down a machine that reproduces the issue yesterday.  We're actively working on a fix and I'll update this post again once we have more information.

Update 4/11

Our developers have found a fix for this issue and our quality assurance team will be testing this new build out over the weekend.  If everything looks good, we'll work on how and when we'll get this deployed.

Update 4/14

Testing over the weekend went well and no new issues were found.  We're now working with our deployment teams to get this out to all Mac users.  If the testing and web staging go as planned, we expect that we'll have this update available for download on Wednesday, April 16th.  If you have the Flash Player update mechanism (found in the Advanced tab of the Flash Player system preference panel) set to "Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)" then you will receive the update within 24 hours of the release being made available.  Customers that have the option set to "Notify me to install updates" will get a notification dialog within 7 days.  We will also make this update available for download though http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer.  I'll post again if we run into any snags or when the update is made available.

Update 4/16

I'm pleased to announce that Flash Player 13.0.0.201 for Mac is now available from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer.  This release resolves the crash described in this thread.  As noted above, you can either download this immediately from adobe.com or wait for the update to be applied automatically, within 24 hours, via our recommended auto update mechanism.  If you encounter any problems updating, please visit http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html for basic troubleshooting steps.

Adobe HAS FIXED IT!  I've installed the update and it works.

    EASIEST WAY to install:

Click on Systems Preferences in the Dock.

    Click on Flash Player.

    Click on Advanced.

Under "Updates" click on "Check Now."

Dolphin100, which browsers have you tried?

    April 16, 2014

This is all well and good for users with those machines; however, I'm running a mid-2011 i7 iMac and Mac OS X 10.9.2. When using the installer, it gets to the select your update preferences and becomes unresponsive. Clicking any button does nothing.

However, when I go to archive page: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html and download  (Released 4/8/2014) Flash Player 13.0.0.182 (148.88 MB), it installs properly, displaying these two dialogs, instead of the one above:

    http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad87/baltwo2/Adobyinstall2_zps424b82fc.png

Since I can't find any other way to file a bug report, let me know why this is occurring.

    Chris,

Is there a chance that this code conflict is at the root of the Lightroom 5 Slideshow problem? I cannot get any SS in LR5 to run. The images load and the screen goes black, never displaying any image.  LR4 ran shows w/o any problem.

There are a number of threads in the Forms complaining about this issue going back months without any reply from Adobe.

Please share with the LR group.

    Thx,

    Steve

@sdviewpnt - Shouldn't be related to Lightroom.  Can you post back or email me (ccampbel@adobe.com) the lightroom threads so I can reference these when I reach out to the Lightroom team?

@baltwo - Thank you for the heads up.  I've let the install teams know about this issue.  In general, you should be able to post bugs to http://bugbase.adobe.com but this was down for me yesterday and today.

2010 IMac 10.6.8  Installed 12.0 as you suggested. Went through preferences and was told update available. Installed updated. Still nothing. Everything keeps telling me to update to the most current version of Flashplayer. Please help. Two days spent trying everything...

@Merry777 We have a new version 13.0.0.201 that was made available today that fixes this bug.  Please try downloading from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer

    Dear Adobe People:

Thank you so much for fixing this!  I have a 2006 MacBook Pro, and I was driving myself up the wall trying to fix the plug in issues...  My negative energy was upsetting my girlfriend also.

    Again, THANK YOU!!!

    I am once again happy.

I'm glad to see this problem is being addressed. I'm running 10.7.5 on a Mac that was manufactured during the date range impacted by this glitch. I reverted to Flash 12 and functionality was restored. One thing I wanted to mention is that many of the Mac models that were manufactured between 2006-2008 are incapable of running 10.8 or 10.9, For instance, my computer caps out at 10.7.x. While Apple recently formally discontined support for 10.6, OS 10.7 is still actively supported. I would hope that Adobe takes into consideration that many of the Mac models impacted by this glitch are incapable of upgrading higher than OS 10.7 and would therefore include OS 10.7 when developing a patch to this known issue.

I tried the suggested workaround (uninstall 13 and reinstall 12) but the flash player still does not work.  I have recently updated my Mac to OS X Mavericks (10.9.2) and have found several OS settings changed causing other things not to work since the update.  For example, the scroll bar in Safari was gone...  I would suggest including Mavericks in your testing and making sure it works.  Thanks!

I have a Macbook (13" Aluminium Late 2008) running OS X 10.9.2 and like Stephen the workaround has not worked for me although I have not noticed any other problems. I would second Stephen's suggestion re testing with Mavericks.

I found this additional advice on the Apple Support Forum

    1. System Preferences >  Flash Player > Advanced >  Delete  All

         Press the "Delete All" button

    2. Safari > Preferences > Privacy

This solved my problem of juddering YouTube Videos

    Hope this helps.

The plug in resulted in my web eMail not working.  unfortunately, Charter doesn't support local client eMail, just web mail.  Cretans, but that's a different issue.

I've been on the phone with Charter and they know about the issue and are working directly with Adobe to resolve it.

I uninstalled Flash v13 and reinstalled v12 and it's working again.

Using an iMac, 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo

    OS X 10.6.8

    Safari 5.1.10

Hope you folks get it resolved soon.

    Thanks.

@G Fre - Regarding the Flash Update dialog appearing every few minutes.  Could you check to see if you have a mms.cfg file located in your /Application Support/Macromedia folder.  If so, please open this with a text editor and check to see if you have a line that reads

AutoUpdateInterval=0.  If so, try changing the 0 to 7.

@station_two - Thanks, I had forgotten about that interface and will try to refer to the close button without any color bias in the future

For customers that are crashing or running into problems with hardware newer than 2008, please email ccampbel@adobe.com with your crash logs so I can take a look.  You're most likely running into a different issue as this is specific to certain CPU's.

I also wanted to mention that I've updated the original post in this thread with our current status regarding when an update will be made available.

Mid-2007 Mac 24"/Safari, virtually vanilla setup.

That was an hour or two I shall never see again, but at least I'm functioning again.  I wish I'd looked at this Thread first, instead of repeatedly installing, uninstalling, rebooting, refreshing and going round in circles!!

Thanks, Chris Campbell, that worked fine .

Thank you for your original post and the updates, Chris. It's most appreciated.

I'll take this opportunity to comment on a minor nuisance that temporarily throws me off when reading Adobe instructions on closing a Mac window:

Many of us have been using the Graphite interface ever since the infamous colored candy buttons arrived on OS X and haven't seen a "red" or otherwise colored button on any Mac window for years.

I don't know through how many hoops I've already jumped because of Adobe stuff just not working. During the last updates, every new version of Flash broke something on my machines. With version 12 it was my old version of NetNewsWire that still does a great job otherwise. And now that. I know my machines are old but they're still working well enough for me not to replace them. I just don't understand how a big company like Adobe obviously doesn't test their software in a sufficient number of environments. I use Adobe CS for work. Until the CS3 version, every new version broke something important like web export in PS and AI, save as PDF, issues that were, for a great part, never really fixed and this is why I stopped upgrading CS with CS3. Because every time I see a new version of Adobe's software, my first thought isn't "what will be new?" but "what will happen this time?".
