Cannot get Flash Player 10.2 to install to Windows 7

Hi

I am trying to install Flash player to a friends' PC - an operation I *thought* would be quite quick... Oh well. It was working - but they tell me an update in early Feb failed & they haven't beemn able to get it working again.

They are running Windows 7 64bit.

We are running IE 32bit to install to.

I have reviewed the suggestions in http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html which were very helpful, but to no joy.

The installation quits a little too quickly, and then when I test by going to  http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about I get the broken icon & no version.

I have downloaded the installer version 10.2.152.32 and been through as many of the advnaced sections in the 19166 article as seem relavent. No improvement.

Although it suggests that a user is not an administrator when "If you are not an administrator, you see a selection named User Accounts And Family Safety". Its a home version of W7, and I have triple checked. They are an admin, but they see this phrase.

Initially they were using an admin account with no password, so we set one up. Still no joy.

Internet explorer does not see flash player as an installed add-on - neither enabled nor disabled.

The install folder does exist in SysWOW64, and the content files mostly get removed when uninstall happens, and then re-appear when install takes place. (The log file persists).

I tried registering the ocx with "Regsvr32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\Flash10n.ocx" (and did note that it errored unless I chosed to lauch the command prompt with 'Run As Administrator' - this prompted me to triple check I was indeed on as an admin. Even created and additional admin user too).

I did not see any of the 'common errors when installing'.

I've tried running the SubInACL and reset fp10 file. But got errors at the end - since the fp10 script seems to point to the system32 folder and not the syswow64. Might htat be worth pursuing I wonder? It seemed to come from a page dealing with FP10.1 errors... so I stopped there on that.

I have installed Firefox (v3.6) and the flashplayer to go on that - which works and at least lets them view content again.

I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction of what to check next?

    Hi, Beginning with Vista and included with Win7, Microsoft added Security Features that Involve Administrator Accounts.

    The Troubleshooting Guide for Flash Player for Windows has some of this info included, but these articles have more info. You've probably read the reason that this Account is needed also.

    Once the Administrator Account is confirmed, then use that to Uninstall/Install Flash Player. If you use the Manual method, then all browser windows must be closed, disable any instant messenger service in the system tray. You may need to disable the Anti-Virus until finished.

    Hello - thanks for the reply.

    I believe I have tried all of these suggestions.

    I did go throught the user accounts setting in control panel - there was only one account at the time & it was set to administrator. (The MS article you refered me to points out that if there is only one account then it must be an admin anyway). In addition I created a new admin account too, and tried with that as well.

    I have removed the software, rebooted and then re-installed the software many times without success.

    So unless there is something wrong with the stations permissions somewhere?

    Any other suggestions please?

    Hi again

    I'd like to go back & retry the reset_fp10 with SubInACL.

    Can you confirm that it is suitable for a 64bit version of windows7 please?

    The reason I ask is that it will need editing to look in the SysWOW64 system folder rather than the System32.

    So I wonder are the security groups of "adminstrators" and "system" still the required groups for the various regstry classes & settings it points to too?

    Indeed might there be some other registry bits that it needs directing at?

    Thanks for your time on this. I'll give it another go & then suggest they keep going with Firefox I think :-). (Which is working like a charm).

    Hi, I'd have to review the article on whether a 64bit OS has any bearing on using it. Just off the top of my head, I wouldn't think so, since it is the Registry and Permissions that are being reset.

    Did you check to see if there are any files in the System32 location?

    Also you may want to check if a Kill-bit has been set. Since this isn't your computer it's hard to tell what sites etc. Also you may find out if there has been any Virus infection and what Anti-Virus program removed it. It appears so far that the issue is a Permission one, but those factors can block an Install of Flash Player in IE.

    If you do find a KIll-bit has been set, in Post#4 at the bottom is the solution.

    I would check the Kill-bit/Virus issue first before trying the SubInACL again.
