Flash 10 install issues and use with PowerPoint

Hi feeling really frustrated now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a quick solution.

I'm running Windows 7, Flash 10.0.32.18 (now the Beta 10.1 in desperation) and I haven't had to reinstall flash on start up until last night so that was an unfortunate down turn of events for me and not even the reason for searching the forums.

My issue started as I stood in front of one of my classes (I work in a College) with PowerPoint 2007 and a lesson ready to go and the Flash images that had always worked refused to be anything other than a still image with no interaction.

Unfortunately when I upgraded to Windows 7 I carried out a clean install and reinstalled Office along with the latest versions of Flash, Shockwave etc. I say unfortunately because I now have no way of knowing where the problem lie. On asking, Microsoft are adamant that it is an Adobe issue and the forum would seem to back this up.

On investigation I found that when looking at a slide the object was identified as a Flash object but I can't view any properties, also 'insert a shockwave flash object' is not available in the control toolbox. This would indicate that Flash is not installed even though viewing flash on the internet has not been an issue.

The last issue that may help toward a solution is that when trying to view an .swf file I'm informed that I need to have FlashPlayer installed (I have) and when trying to use a third party flash player such as SWF Opener it also asks me to install flash.

Like everyone else here I've installed, uninstalled all Flash etc. more times than I care to remember now.

I'm not that technically minded when it comes to the nitty gritty of software operation and programming, I just like things to work.

Please help as the most important thing I use my laptop for I now can't!!!!

    Correct answer

Hi gm377, I think have an idea what happened. Following is what I see from the screenshots and my opinions. I'm just going to list them and explain them separately.

I have these screenshots printed out, it may be easier if you do too, your call.

    1. The Adobe site where you tested, that is correct.

    2. Take a look at the 1st screenshot you sent of what was in Add/Remove

    3. Take a look at the 1st screeshot of the Add ons

    4. Take a look at the screenshot of the new add ons you sent today 11/20/09

    5. Take a look at the screenshot of the new add ons without permission you sent today 11/20/09

    2. above- Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin listed and installed on 11/18/09 version is correct but is that Flash Player 10 ActiveX? Could be?

    3. above  Shockwave Flash Object not listed in Add ons

    4. above  Shockwave Flash Object in screenshot of new add ons - This is an old one-date of 7/18/09 not today

    5. above  Shockwave Flash Object in screenshot of new add ons without permission- This is an old one-date of 7/18/09, not today

On the only Add/Remove copy I have you installed Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin on 11/18. Now I don't know if the #2 copy of add ons was after that or before that install. I would say before since no Shockwave Flash Object is listed in it.

When Flash Player is installed correctly, in the Add/Remove it is normally listed: "Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X" at lease it is in mine, but then again I'm running XP3/IE6(which I love, by the way:-) I said all of that just to make an observation that maybe at that time (11/18/09) you did not have FP installed; we know the Shockwave Flash Object wasn't in the add ons and it would have been. I don't know what site you used to Uninstall/Install etc. either. Irrelevant now.

    Summary: on next post:-)

To gm377 con't from previous post

Summary: The Installation from the Adobe download site installs Flash Player 10ActiveX AND the Shockwave Flash Object

I think the Stand Alone Version of the Installer installs ONLY the Flash Player, NOT the Shockwave Flash Object

That is why #1 in the post previous to this one is correct. The Shockwave Flash Object (plug-in is being asked for)

And that is what youtube is asking for, even tho they say "Flash Player", they assume and understand that the Adobe

                     site Installs both.

Now, Adobe does state that the Uninstaller does need to be run prior to a download and install of Flash Player 10 ActiveX.

Also, since the beta was installed and now is not there, and with Uninstalls and Installs done, you never know if a glitch occurred.

Flash Player 10 ActiveX should be listed in Add/Remove and in Manage add ons Shockwave Flash Object - Adobe Systems, Inc.-

Enabled- ActiveX Control should be entered and the File is Flash10c.ocx.

Solution: Return to the Adobe test site- http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about , keeping your add ons Disabled and Enabled as you have listed in the screenshot of today (11/20/09) and since the message is "An additional plug-in is required to display some elements on

this page" and the small image says "Get Plugin" and when you click on it the message is it wants to install Flash Player. The test is clearly telling you that the Shockwave Flash Object (ActiveX Control Flash10c.ocx) is not there, and by saying it wants to install Flash Player it is also saying Flash Player 10 ActiveX is not there either or the "Get Plugin" would not be missing.

So Yes, do it!! Don't forget to Reboot afterwards, check in Add/Remove and see what is listed, check in manage add ons and see what is there. Then see what youtube has to say and your slides on Power Point and where ever else you would like to go:-)

The worst that can happen is that this won't get the job done and we'll have to Uninstall and Re-Install, but I'm hoping for success!!!

Sorry for the long posts, but I write as I'm thinking.

Nice Screenshots by the way, thanks

    UPDATE:

I ALMOST FORGOT, WATCH OUT FOR THE GOOGLE TOOL BAR. IT IS USUALLY CHECKED AND WILL INSTALL WITH ADOBE FLASH IF YOU DO NOT UNCHECK IT.

Hi greasemonkey377, did you forget to increase the size of the text?

You need to know what you have on your computer.

    1. First, go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about  This will tell you if you have FP installed and what version

    2. Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove and list all that is Adobe

    3. Go to Tools>Manage Add ons and do the same and indicate whether the add on is Disabled or Enabled

    Thank you

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Yes sorry about the tiny font hope your eyes are better than mine But it is my first posting on a forum so I'm still getting the hang of it.

Anyway back to the problem at hand. I've attached some print screens so you can see what I can. It is quite clear that in the 'add remove programs' it shows that FlashPlayer 10.0.32.18 is installed but it is not in view in the 'manage add ons' am I missing something really obvious? (I use Chrome if that makes a difference)

When checking if flash was working, it wasn't and I had to reinstall it for it to work when viewing websites so I guess I'm also with the 'reinstall flash on start-up' crew.

If I can mention the PowerPoint issue, if that's not to premature, when opening a .ppt file that has Flash objects in it I'm presented with a message telling me that 'Some controls on this presentation can't be activated. They might not be registered on this computer'. This often happens if were left with one of the college machines that doesn't have Flash installed by our CSU.

    Many Thanks

Hi dreams44, I think our posts crossed in transit. When it comes to powerpoint I have never used it nor am I familiar

with it. Are you looking for a button within the powerpoint program itself ? Maybe if you could explain a little I could help

    but not sure.

    Thanks
