Going Crazy: Why No Sound w. Flash 9 in some but not all sites w/ embedded video?

i have going crazy with no sound w/ Flash Player 8 or 9 in Internet Explorer (IE) with playing embedded video. this problem occurs with many websites with embedded youtube or other flash videos. the sound bar was set to zero, but even if i drag it to a higher level, there is no sound. yet, when the same video is played from youtube directly, it works perfectly.

when i uninstall Flash 8 or 9 and reinstall an older version such as Flash 7, the sound plays perfectly without problem.

i am running win xp professional sp2. latest updates/patches installed. ie 6.

i have tried the following:
1. the k-lite codec trick - does not work.
2. scanned for virus/spyware - none found.
3. uninstall all Flash w/ adobe uninstaller and reinstall the latest build - does not work.
4. clean out all registry entries related to flash and reinstall - does not work
5. deleted quicktime - does not work

can someone please help me? i searched everywhere and this is driving me mad. i saw simliar posts but none describes my situation and offers a fix.

It seems that no sound with the flash player is a common problem. I will try a few of the suggestions in this thread and let everyone know how it goes. Thanks

Figured out my sound problem. I had my speakers plugged into the microphone port instead of the speaker port. That's curious because for some reason when I had played my Windows Media player it played sound out of the microphone port to my speakers, yet I couldn't get sound when I was playing flash movies.

So now that I have the speakers plugged into the right port, my flash player is working great... Case solved.

My Windows Media Player plays sound, but I could not get sound from any Flash player videos. This one had me scratching my head quite allot. There has been allot of people with this problem, and I have noted many different fixes, I even as a last resort reloaded my operating system to no avail.

Then quite by accident I discovered the problem that I was having, and I don't quite know how to fix it. But here goes.... If you go to a YouTube video, play the video, right click your mouse over the video until a menu pops up, click on "Settings", click on the microphone - then I can hear sound.... But if I click on another video, I have to do the same procedure to listen to the video. Clicking on the microphone in the settings box seems to turn the sound on.

I tryed going to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html web page and clicking on "Global Storage Settings panel" but the Third Party Flash Content is already checked......

    Any Ideas??????

whats up with the taking 5 months to respond there adobe?!
haha, well, none of your fixes worked for me
i figured out if i move my center speaker to the front speaker port it will give me sound, but only in the front speaker, so it sounds like garbage. plus, now i dont get surround when using WMP - seems like maybe mono, but i haven't really done much testing..
i tried too plugging it into the center port and calling that the front port... but that didn't seem to work for some reason

so, now i'm stuck with either crap audio or no internet audio....
    whats up guys?

There are several possible reasons audio may fail in Flash Player for Windows, including the following:

    • The installed audio driver may be outdated.
    • The default device for sound playback may not match the installed audio card.
    • The Windows system registry may be missing key entries for a Microsoft codec named 'WaveMapper'.

    Solution 1: Update Audio Drivers.
To find the manufacturer and driver version of your system's audio hardware:

    1. Select Start > Run.
    2. Type dxdiag in the Open text box.
    3. Select the Sound tab
The device name is listed under the Device category.
The driver date and version is listed under the Drivers category.

To update the device driver, find the website for the manufacturer of your computer. Search for and download the latest driver for your audio card. In some cases it may be necessary to obtain the driver directly from the audio hardware manufacturer.

Solution 2: Confirm that the default device for sound playback is correct.

    1. Select Start > Control Panel or Start>Settings>Control Panel.
    2. Select Sounds And Audio Devices.
    3. Confirm that the default device matches the audio hardware installed.

Solution 3: Check the WaveMapper sub key in the Windows system registry.

WaveMapper processes .wav sound files in Windows. If it is missing from the system registry, then audio will not play back using Adobe Flash Player.

To confirm that the WaveMapper sub key is in the system registry:

    1. Select Start > Run.
    2. Type in regedit in the Open text box.
    3. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

    4. On the right panel, check for a sub key called wavemapper.
    5. If it is missing, right-click on the right panel and select New String Value.
    6. Name the new string value wavemapper
    7. Right-click on the new wavemapper string value and select Modify.
    8. Add the Value data msacm32.dvr

This information is also documented on the Adobe Support Site for Flash Player

I had the same problem after installing a logitech cam. No Flash Player sound. I am using XP.
    I made two adjustments.
1: I changed my sound playback default device
    Control Panel
    Sounds/Audio Devices
Audio tab - from modem #0 playback to SoundMax Digital Audio

2: I adjusted the volume in my sounds and audio devices.
    Control Panel
    Sounds/Audio Devices
Audio tab - volume - SW SYNTH from mute low - unchecked the mute, adjusted volume to max
Hope this helps and happy holidays
