Unable to install Flash Player Version 17.0.0.134 in Windows 7 64-bit

"Unable to install Flash Player Version 17.0.0.134 in Windows 7 64-bit" All I get is a Black box "Installing" and nothing happens for hours & hours. I have tried downloading from the archives, an older, working version of Flash Player.  Works on many sites.  But, not all.  ShutterFly is one that advises me to "Download the latest version of Flash Player".  To no avail, can not download.

After much trial and error and brute force and google searching, I believe I have the answer. In the latest version of Internet Explorer found on Windows 8, Flash is built in! The Flash MSI won't install, because it knows this. But it gives the unhelpful error “Error 1722, there is a problem with the Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup package did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action NewCustomerAction1, location…\InstallAX_17_0_0…”.

If you use a zip extractor like 7-Zip to extract files from the MSI, then run the resultant EXE, it gives you an error that says Flash is already installed "Your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser includes the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player built-in."

BTW, don't do what I did -- I removed all references to Flash from the registry and the file system, even though it required me to seize ownership and reset permissions. The result was that I completely broke it, and had to fix it -- by installing an IE update!

Hi Cara,

I'm sorry you went through the trouble you went though attempting to install Flash Player for IE on Windows 8.

Microsoft has been embedding Flash Player in IE since the initial release of Windows 8 (and 8.1)  This is not new to the latest version of IE.  Since Microsoft embeds Flash Player in IE, updates are also delivered by Microsoft via updates to IE.

Hi Maria,

If this is old news to Adobe, then you have had ample time to implement informational error messages, and to update message boards such as this one with that information.

“Error 1722, there is a problem with the Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup package did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action NewCustomerAction1, location…\InstallAX_17_0_0…” is NOT clear at all on this issue!

Did you try the following Adobe website?

Installation problems | Flash Player | Windows

At the bottom of the page it says "Still having problems". Click on the appropriate link for your browser.

Yes, and I get “The installation encountered errors;

The ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered”.

I have tried the troubleshooting Tips and get nowhere.

Alan,

If you do a Google search for "ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered"  you will find solutions to your problem.

Some of the articles that you will find are from this Adobe Flash Player forum.
