Did you previously activate LR3 after providing Adobe with proof of your eligibility to use academic edition LR? If so, you can now upgrade to LR 6 for $79, yes, even if you are no longer eligible for Adobe academic software. Adobe knows that they get many people using their software when they're students, but those folks will want to upgrade after graduating or leaving school at the regular upgrade price, and that's fine with Adobe.

However somebody can't buy an Adobe academic software serial number (registration key) for an older version like LR3 and then skip having to verify eligibility by paying to upgrade to the current edition. In that case, if you had not activated the key through Adobe with your Adobe ID, you would have to verify current eligibility for academic software with Adobe before being issued a serial number for LR6.

Here's info on eligibility for Adobe academic discounts (scroll past the CC stuff to see the info that would apply to LR3 or LR6):

I went to the link but I don't see the information about upgrading to LR6 only CC.

Adobe evidently edited the page since I wrote the answer above and removed the link. They make the upgrade edition of the software hard to find. They want you to subscribe to CC, as you're seeing.

Please click this link to buy and download the upgrade edition of Lightroom 6

    http://shop.adobe.com/store/adbehap/en_SG/pd/ThemeID.25225600/productID.316961400

and if at a later date that no longer works, find it by websearching "download upgrade Lightroom 6"

Be sure your system can run it before buying. In particular one gotcha is you must have a 64-bit system to install LR6 (or LR CC 2015+). Earlier LR versions ran--slowly, but at least would install on 32-bit Windows systems, but not LR6. Check the requirements before buying. (For the first 30 days, you can get a refund on software purchases made directly through Adobe, the only way upgrade LR6 is sold, but it's better to check and be sure first.)
