Illustrator CS6 exit code 6

Community Beginner ,
Jul 03, 2015 Jul 03, 2015

Hi,

I've been trying for the past couple days to install Illustrator CS6. I purchased it third party so it came with a redemption code that just gave me a download (not requiring a serial key).

The installation seems to go well until it gets to 42%. After that, the download speed gets abnormally faster. Then, at about 81%, it says, "Installation failed." This is the report I get:

proof2.PNG

Retrying the installation only puts it back to that 42% mark. And please don't give me a link to exit code 6 and 7. I've already scanned that page over and over. I've done nearly every suggestion on the page. I've uninstalled and reinstalled MSVC and restarted my desktop ad naseam, but nothing seems to be working. I need some real help, not a link to "help" page. I can't really change or rename any setup files since this is an intangible download.

I'm fairly new to Adobe's systems, so I don't know if installing Adobe Drive or AIR is actually relevant to CS6 if it will make things even worse. I recently installed Photoshop CS6 (no problem there whatsoever) and fear I'll corrupt it by tinkering around with Illustrator too much.

Thank you,

Navigate to C: > Program Files  >Adobe.

Open Adobe folder and let me know whether the Adobe Illustrator CS 6 folder is created or not ?

If Created, open it and check whether the Illustrator Launch icon is created or not ?

Thank you for the quick response.

I went to the program files and here's what I see:

proof3.PNG

Something must be wrong though, as I would imagine that Illustrator should show as an established application and a desktop icon like Photoshop shows down below. Anyway, here's what the screen looks like after I click on the highlighted file:

proof4.PNG

When I click on the shortcut, it loads up Illustrator fine but it erroneously marks it as a "Tryout" edition. I know for a fact that this is a legitimate copy as I was able to get the full version of Illustrator running on another desktop that I tested it on. For some reason, it marks the application on this computer as a "Tryout," so from what I've read so far, it looks like the installation is not complete, making the system read the download as a trial version. I know it's a trial version for sure because the "Deactivate" button under "Help" is grayed out and there's a "Product registration" button above it. Also, if this helps any, here's what the program list for the MSVC downloads on my desktop:

Yes, though it doesn't show me a countdown, a trial window does pop up and it shows me the bottom options of "License this Software" and "Continue Trial."

When I sign in, it prompts me for a serial number. As I mentioned above, all I have to go by is the redemption code since no serial number of any kind was given.

You're right. It does talk about optional components. What does this mean in terms of the situation though?

I don't know if this is true, but I'm guessing that what the system views as "optional components" are actually the files that establish the program as a full download and not a "Tryout." Is there any way that I can make the program realize that it is not supposed to be a trial?

After 81% , did you get error message like "

"Installation failed - Installation completed though some optional components failed to install correctly.

(6)"??

I don't believe it said anything about "optional components" but I will check again. I will have to uninstall and reinstall Illustrator though. I alluded to this, but the system goes into an endless cycle of the installation failure rewinding back to 42% just so it can fail again. The only way to stop it is by clicking the small "close" sign whilst it says "Waiting," which was how I was able to open the program in the first place, only to realize it marked itself as a trial.

I uninstalled the program and I'm re-downloading Illustrator now so it might take a few minutes to see what the initial error message on the CC hub.

I finally figured it out, but this solution has no relevance to the issue I was experiencing. I didn't realize that the re-seller had also included a serial number for the program inside the box. I put in the serial number, and of course, Adobe acts like I have no internet service and simply says to "...retry." So, since this is CS6, I was fortunately able to validate the serial number offline using the request code system. And, wouldn't you know it, shortly after installing and validating the program, it gives me error 16. After uninstalling and reinstalling, it give me that rare bug of the 32627 day trial. After validating my re-installment, however, everything seems to be okay and the program finally realizes that it is a full version (the "Tryout" text on the splash icon disappeared) and error 16 has not shown up yet. If it does, I might go clinically insane, thanks to Adobe. It's 12:11 PM where I live right now, so when I get up, I'll check to see if Illustrator is still running fine. If not, I guess I will come back here and make a discussion about that wonderful error 16.

This is my first time using the forums, and I have to say, I am completely dissatisfied with the help that I have received and have watched other people receive. For some reason, when I came to a help forum from a professional like Adobe, I expected something more impressive with people who actually knew what they were talking about instead of "MVPs" posting nothing but a hyperlink to a complicated problem (as if that would ever suffice anything) and hanging people out to dry.

Well, isn't this just grand? I leave Illustrator for a few hours and it goes right back to error 16. Uninstall, reinstall, works for a few hours, boot up the program in the morning, and another error 16.

The best part about this is that I've tried to troubleshoot for the past couple days, only to find out that, for some reason, I have an SLStore file but not a PCD file. Not to mention, trying to deselect the "Read only" option or applying any other changes to the SLStore file is impossible as everything goes back to the default settings when opening the properties again. I'm starting to think that the "optional components" the installation failure report mentioned each time weren't so "optional" at all. Trying to fix error 16 only gives me error 1, which is indicating that I screwed something up in the system files.

I figure I will just be ignored again so I won't bother starting anymore discussions. I'm just writing this as a reference for other frustrated users so that they can see that this problem was at least identified though not solved.

Since it seems that the third party installers in this copy appear to be the root of this whole issue (no matter if it was downloaded with the redemption code or installed with a serial number), I think I will have better chances of returning this third party copy and buying one that should be coming from someone who purchased it from Adobe.

I pay an arm and a leg for your guys' software and this is what I'm met with? Error, after error, after error? I didn't pay around half a grand to use software that works only when it feels like it. I own the license to this copy and I expect it to work like a professional program, not a flimsy torrent download.

Sorry for late reply , stuck with some situation .

Error 16 is an configuration error .

The main reason for the cause of error  insufficient permissions to Licensing folders.

Sometimes, Corrupt licenses or Applications itself. Hence the message indicates Uninstall and reinstall.

The first thing , you can do is provide full permissions to necessary folders .

Method 1 :

We need to provide full permissions to folders like Adobe PCD , SLStore, SLCache. These folders specifically holds License related files.

Instead of providing full permissions to folders Individually , you can simply provide full permissions to Adobe folder ( Parent )  itself , so that the permissions will be Inherited to Sub folders and Files as well [ Child]  .

Method 2:

If providing full permissions does not solve the issue , you can try with providing Special permissions, before that , simply enable hidden Admin account once , which has Super user access by default.

Once logged in to Hidden Administrator , launch Illustrator application and check.

The steps are mentioned in the below link :

Let me know if you face any issue.

Once again, thank you very much for getting back to me.

I went to the Adobe file from the program files (x86) and changed every selection in the  "Group or user names" list so that each one is fully checked off for any type of control, especially "full control." I redownloaded Illustrator just now so it hasn't given me error 16 yet. I guess I'll let it sit for a while and see what happens. One thing though was that I wasn't able to change the "CREATOR OWNER" listing for some reason as it immediately reverted back to the default settings after I switched everything on to "allow." I hope that isn't going to be a problem.

Alright. I was drawing some stuff on Illustrator just now and, strangely, some of the buttons lock up (such as the color swatch panel). I figured it just needed a refresh so I close the program and try to open it up again. What happens when I do that is the application manager that thinks I'm in a trial pops up. To back that up, the splash screen shows "Tryout" under application name. The weird thing is, when I go to the "help" menu, there is no "validate serial number" tab. Hold on a minute... I just tried it right now and it the "Tryout" text from the splash page vanished, as well as the application manager trial pop-up.

It seems to have gone back to normal but I don't understand why it appears to be so unstable at times like this. Error 16 (or 1) hasn't appeared yet so everything looks okay for now.

As expected, I just got error 16 a couple minutes ago, so it appears method 1 didn't work.

I followed the steps and successfully created the hidden administrator account but, for some reason, some programs have crossed over to the admin account while others (like Photoshop and Illustrator CS6) haven't. I don't know very much about computing with multiple users, but is there any way I can transfer files and programs over to the admin account? It would save a lot of time if I could do that instead of using a flash drive to get everything onto the admin account.

Only Desktop will be different for different accounts.

You can browser all user profiles from Hidden Admin account , which has Super user privileges.

When logged in to Hidden Admin account , open C:drive.

Look for the folders named " Users"

Open it and locate your regular account , open the same,

open Desktop folder and copy the contents and check,

Just for fun, I uninstalled and redownloaded Illustrator again just to finish an idea I was sketching. I'm sure I'll eventually get an error 16 on it too, but the weird part is that after I completed the offline activation, it's like the system didn't recognize that I had even done anything. It seems to be related to the false alarm that happened today, but I closed and reopened the program and found that the splash page said "Tryout," and the trial application manager is showing again seconds after booting the program up. I figured it would go away, but it's has been about 5 hours and the same symptoms are occurring. Hopefully it will go away tomorrow. If not, it may be that the program has done created another problem for itself.

If I end up getting another error 16 tomorrow, I will head on to method 2, test it out, and get back to you on the results.

For confirmation purpose we will check Hosts file once :

1)Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and look for file named hosts inside etc folder.

2)Copy the hosts file to Desktop and open the same with notepad.

Let me know whether you can see any Adobe related entries inside Hosts file like 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com.......etc??

Literally seconds after I wrote the last post, I tried to open an Illustrator file and I'm stuck again with error 16.

Okay. I checked "Hosts" and here's what the whole thing looks like:

I am not sure if the file I underlined is what you mentioned, but it seems to be similar to what you said to look for.

Finally!!!!!!!

The rock has found problem why you are getting trial message .

Those are Adobe blocker entries , which are blocking activation process . All Adobe entries must be removed . Then it will activate the application for sure.

For that , simply reset the Hosts file to default.

Follow below steps :

Windows 7 :

Simply run Microsoft Fix it tool to reset Hosts file  to default :

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866

Windows 8 :

  1. Open Notepad. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search, type Notepad, and then tap the Notepad icon. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Search, type Notepad, and then click Notepad.
  2. Copy the following text, and then paste the text into the file:

    # Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host # localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost

  3. On the File menu, tap or click Save as, type "hosts" in the File name box (as displayed in the following image), and then save the file to the desktop.
    The screenshot for this step
  4. Close Notepad.
  5. Open the %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\Etc folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search, type run, and then tap the Run icon. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Search, type run, and then click the Run icon.
    2. Type %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\Etc in the Open box, and then tap or click OK.
  6. Select the Hosts file, tap or click Rename, and then rename the file as "Hosts.old".
  7. Copy or move the Hosts file that you created in step 3 to the %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\Etc folder. If you are prompted to enter an administrator password, tap or click Continue.
