Will Lightroom 4 run on a Windows 32-bit system?

Also, will Lightroom 4 interface with Photoshop 5.5, or is Photoshop 6.0 required?

Yes, thank you I saw this:

              Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor

However, this is unclear as to whether this means a 64 bit processor is required. Mylenium replied that it would run on a 32 bit machine, but again, from the specs this is somewhat unclear.

Furthermore, it is unclear whether LR4 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit environments.  I remember installing CS5, some of the programs like photoshop installed in both environments, whereas products like Effects and Premier, only installed in 64-bit environments (I found 32-bit versions on a separate disc) - note: I may be wrong on the specific programs, but I do recall there were some differences.

Pilaar39 Mylenium is correct it will work with 32-bit processors and Windows operating systems.  You can find more details at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5393.

Yes, it will run on 32bit Vista/ Win7. How it interacts with PS depends on what you need. All it does is call an external process and hand over the images. It doesn't really care which version of PS. The only issue of concern is the camera model and in turn the required version of Camera Raw. If you use the new Raw 2012 engine in LR 4, images may simply not open in older versions because it doesn't exist there, but only in CS6....

Thank you for the reply.. But, I am still a bit confused.

If I understand you correctly, if working with JPGs or other non-RAW images, there is no problem handing off images from LR to PS 5.5, doing some work in PS, and then handing the image back to LR... Is that correct?

However, I am not clear on the latter part of your reply..  My camera is a Nikon D200 - if I shoot RAW, will I still be able to use the workflow as stated above?

Yes, non-RAW images pose no issue whatsoever. RAW images may. Regardless whether your camera is an older model and has been around for a while, if you use the new Camera RAW engine in LR 4 it won't be compatible with CS5.5's older engine, but you can override this in LR and revert to the old engine as well. Though that kind of defeats the purpose on some level...
