Adobe Illustrator strokes

Hi

I am having trouble with strokes in Adobe Illustrator. I am trying to make a stroke around a fill of the object so that the stroke actually enlarges the object and doesn't destroy the fill.

The way I have this now is that the stroke is created inside the object's path which means above its fill and it destroys the shape of the object. I need the fill to remain the same and therefore an object, but a stroke to enlarge the object.

Let's say that I draw a square with a black fill and red stroke, now a stroke appears inside the square and makes it smaller (the black fill), and the size of the square remains the same, but I want to make the red stroke outside the fill so that the object becomes larger in size but the black fill remains the same. Of course all I need is a square than all this won't make any difference, but I have a more complex object to work with so a stroke that appears inside the fill basically destroys the shape of the object.

More in detail I need to make a black object with a white outline stroke and than a cut contour for Roland VersaWorks around everything to make a sticker for a car.

I searched everywhere the Youtube, Google, here on this forums, and I can't find whatever the answer is.

Please I need a solution quickly, my job depends on this.

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

A) Square with no stroke.

B} Stroke added to same square, half inside and half outside boundary.

C) Stroke is entirely outside square: in Stroke panel (Window >Stroke) select Align Stroke to Outside (assuming recent enough version of Illustrator)

D) In Appearance panel (Window > Appearance) stroke is moved beneath fill, half inside and half outside boundary of square.

Thank you all for helping me with this truble with illustrator I have successfully made a cut countur by following advices from both tromboniator and Monika Gause, although tromboniator's advice didn't help with this complex object in Illustrator 2014, for some reaon stroke options are grayed out, so I successfully created what I wanted thanks to Monika Gause's advice.

I selected the tromboniator's answer as correct answer because it's more in detail explained, however both answers should be marked as correct.

Thank you once  again for helping me.

Thanks for quick reply

I have tried your solutions and solution C seems to help me however I have tested this in my illustrator CC 17 but on at work I have an older version the one from 2014 I think, I don't know if I have this option available there.

For your D solution, I already tried this however it makes the stroke inside the boundaries or if I do what you did the stroke disappears completelly I make it 60 pt and it is still not visible.

I will attach an object so that you can see the complexity of it, it's not just a simple squere. (I used squere to make an example).

the first image is original shape, the secound is what I was getting before.

So basically you want to enlarge everything?

Why not use Object > Path > Offset path

or even better Effect > Path > Offset path?

As for your screenshot: you sure that you moved the stroke below the fill in the appearance panel?
