ai file now saved as aic?

Hello, I have been working on a project in Illustrator now for a while. I am fairly new to Adobe platforms. My project, previously saved as an ai file, now only shows up as an aic file. I'm not entirely sure how aic works, but is there any way I can get this back to an ai file so I can edit it?

Do a Save As and save it on your desktop (or another local place on your computer.)

Hi @Karsan30327237pv0v,

Thank you for clarifying the issue. Currently, the iPad version of Illustrator does not provide an option to directly convert an AI file to an AIC (Illustrator Cloud Document) format unless the file is first opened in Illustrator on the iPad.

If you are encountering problems with older AI formats not opening on your iPad, could you please share a sample of one of these older AI files? This will help us check with the team to see if there are any specific compatibility

What do you do if you only use the Illustrator app on the iPad and do not have access to a desktop app?

Whyt do you need to do with the file?

Send it to someone else for editing? If they have Illustrator/desktop, then they can open your AIC.

When I license Adobe Stock files, sometimes they are not AIC compatible. I do not have a desktop version to convert the file myself to an AIC file to then use on my iPad illustrator. The iCloud doesn't have a way for me to convert the file on my iPad. So I don't know how to convert the file. Sending it to someone else is not a fix for me. I should be able to do it myself with the device (ipad) that I have since I only use the iPad version of illustrator.

I understand your concern about working exclusively on the iPad and encountering compatibility issues with Adobe Stock files. While the desktop app provides more file conversion flexibility. However, when selecting Adobe Stock files, ensure they are in AI, SVG, or EPS format, as these are compatible with Illustrator on the iPad.

Let me know if you’d like additional assistance or clarifications!

I do ensure they are AI format. The problem is, some of them are older AI formats and they will not open on my iPad illustrator.  So I need to know if there is a way to convert those AI files to an AIC file while only using the iPad.

Hi @Karsan30327237pv0v,

If you are only using Illustrator on the iPad and don’t have access to the desktop app, you can still work with AIC files as they are Illustrator’s Cloud Documents. To convert your AIC file to a regular AI file:

1. Open the AIC file in Illustrator on the iPad.

2. Go to the Share option (usually represented by an icon with an arrow pointing out).

3. Choose Publish and Export > Quick Export as Ai.

4. Save it to a local or cloud location of your choice.

This will give you an editable Ai file that you can use on any platform. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best,

Anshul Saini

No. The problem is I need to convert AI to AIC with only the iPad illustrator version. I do not have desktop access.

I'm pretty sure aic is not an Illustrator format, and I'd suspect the extension was changed manually, perhaps inadvertently. Rename (a copy of) the file and leave the 'c' off the extension, then try to open it.
