All of a sudden, I can’t ungroup trace

I am seeing now when I add an image to illustrator that a little pop-up comes asking for image trace. When I click that I can no longer ungroup or release the compound path. is it because I'm not using the drop-down menu and using the button that's now showing up? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

You will have to first Expand the trace. Then you can ungroup.
