All pdfs turned to AI files

Ever since the recent update to 23.0.1 every pdf file made prior to the update and every pdf file moving foward now only opens in illustrator. The extension still reads as .pdf but the icon next to the file name is that of an ai file and in the 'kind' column it states that it is an adobe illustrator document. I am exporting the files from word as a pdf but on my computer they are only showing and opening as illustrator files.

that's more to do with your operating system.

select a pdf file, open properties and set the application you want to open it with. set that application to open all pdfs

Im on MacOS how can I find the properties for pdfs?

I found the properties for the pdf under get info and it was showing as AI for the program to open it somehow. I changed that back to preview for all pdfs and that is working normally now. But the pdf icons all still show as AI icons instead of preview

If the solution from te_co doesn't work for you you may also need to try uninstalling apps, then reinstalling them.

This should disconnect the Open with feature wanting to open with the wrong apps.

I tried this first. When the application was unistalled it changed all the pdf icons back to normal and was only opening in preview but once I reinstalled illustrator it went back to the issue I was having before.

On a PC it's possible to select the icon which is displayed, is that possible on a Mac as well? You might have to do this manually if the system isn't working as it is supposed to.
