I've never come across this issue before. When clicking on an art board that is 1080x1920, the art board switches to landscape. This isn't specific to this project. Happens with new documents as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've ended up uninstalling AI and clearing all previous settings and then reinstalling. Seems to have fixed the issue for the time being.

I have the same issue. I reset the prefrences and I thought it helped but it didn't. Later, I reset my computer, deleting everything (I had to do it with no relation to the problem) and the problem still occures.

After updating my software, I recently encountered an issue with artboards. The artboards were automatically shifting from portrait to landscape or vice versa. Although it wasn't a big deal for me to make the necessary changes, I can understand how dealing with hundreds of artboards could be a major inconvenience. This issue has been causing me quite a headache.

Illustrator keeps switching my artboard to landscape on it's own without me doing anything. One moment its portrait, then Illustrator switches it to landscape. VERY ANNOYING.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/
p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Could it be that the view is rotated? You can check the rotation at the lower left corner of your doc window..
Hitting Escape can fix that and there is a Preferences setting to prevent the rotation using the trackpad.

What version of Illustrator and what operating system are you using? Have you recently updated either the program or your OS? If you've recently updated Illustrator then you might want to try resetting your Illustrator preferences. This will reset the program to its defaults and usually will fix strange behavior that occurs after an update.
To do so:
For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.
For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.
To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.
The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

I'm running the latest version of illustrator. Can't remmeber when the last update was, but it just strated happening last week out of nowehere. Working on a design in portrait mode and illustrator just changes the artboard to landscape while I'm not doing anything, and vice versa, working in landscape, it switches the artboard to portrait. It randomly chooses an artboard with multiple artboards on screen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does this. I will reset my prefs and hope that is the solution. Its just SO AGGRAVATING.

Seems to remember the orientation of the artboard from where the items were copied from, but applies it randomly.

Thanks, are there other apps/utilities running simultanuously (or in the background)?
Can you try to run Illustrator without other apps?
A way to do it would be to start up your Mac in safe mode:
