Best way to collaborate on an icon library with multiple people

I'm sure this question has come up before, but what's the best way for me and my fellow designer co-worker to work with an illustrator file together? We have creative cloud for teams and we're both saving our file with our icons in an illustrator file on our network, which is problematic since if we're both in the file at the same time (which happens), I'm afraid we won't we seeing each others' changes or worse, we'll overwrite each other's work. To add to the mix, we also work with an external freelancer that we'd like to have work on icons in this file as well, so if they could also access the library that would be great.

LATEST

Any time you work collaboratively, the best way to make sure that there isn't an overwrite of work is to come up with an effective naming convention and version control. Depending on how often per day, use initials, date, or even time of day so that the latest and greatest is the last used. If you are using a shared cloud, then you should all see what is there and if you name it differently, then you won't re-write (over-write) others work.
