Beyond Frustrated - Exporting file in Illustrator as SVG changes its size

Hi! I've messaged on several forums before elsewhere hoping someone has a work around for this but haven't had any luck. Here is the problem I have:

1. Design a file in Illustrator, save it as an SVG and then open it in my laser cutting software (Lightburn). and the size is different.

2. I've checked off responsiveness so that's not the problem.

3. I've purchased SVG files from other places and can open their files in both Lightburn and Illustrator and the file object size is the same.

4. I know it's not off by a lot but I need it to be the exact same size as these files I'm creating will be for selling.

5. I've also designed it in my lightburn program FIRST, exported it to Illustrator and the size still changes.

I'd appreciate any help at all as to what I'm doing wrong before I scratch my eyeballs out - I've been at this for over two weeks trying to find a solution.

The Lightburn program has import settings at 72 DPI and the settings I usually have for Illustrator are 72 PPI.

Hi @calandria_0579,

I understand how critical it is to maintain precision for your laser-cutting projects, and I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot this issue!

Could you please share the following details so I can better assist you?

1. A sample of both the SVG and AI files (if possible) that are experiencing the size discrepancy.

2. The version of Illustrator you’re currently using.

3. Is this a new issue you’ve started encountering, or is this your first time using this process?

Looking forward to hearing back!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Thanks so much for the help Anshul! I'm using Adobe Illustrator 2021.

I have been laser cutting for 3+ years and always do our rough drafts in illustrator and then size it in Lightburn prior to cutting so I'm not sure if this is new or if this has always been the case.

Like I said, I have downloaded SVG files  from other crafters and they don't change sizes when importing into Lightburn (they stay the same regardless of where I import it to.

I'm attaching both the SVG and the adobe file. Once I use it in lightburn the size changes so I've attached a picture of it as well.
