Break curve but keep gradient

Community Beginner ,

I want to mimic the curve on the left. My progress is on the right.

I made a curve and added the gradiant. What I want to do is add a second border to act as the "spacing" between the line and the background.

I see two options:

a) break the curve apart, but then my gradient gets messed up. Can I break the curve and keep the gradient as it is?

b) can I keep the curve and specify which parts of the self-intersections are in front and which parts are in back?

you will have to cut the curve. How are you cutting it tho? You need to use the divide tool in the pathfinder panel. Draw a line or shape where you want the cut then ungroup and delete the section you dont want.
