Can't edit my placed logo. Help!

I can't edit my placed logo in an AI file. I have tried embedding the logo, expanding it, and tracing it. Nothing works. I can't even edit the size of the logo. I have tried using other logos in it's place and nothing seems to be editable. What's am I doing wrong? These logos were editable in the past, I'm so confused as to why it's not working now.

That's a clipping mask. Open the layers panel and inspect your file.

Is that logo a vector file?

Check by going into Outline View in the View menu

It was not a vector - I have just traced it and turned it into a vector (it's showing up in Outline View). It's still not editable

After you trace it and expand it, it will be a group. Double--click with your Selection tool to enter isolation mode or ungroup.

Show a screen shot if you still have trouble.

I just want to be able to click-drag the corners to make the image larger, and to change the color. I have been able to do this in the past, I have no idea why I can't do it anymore.

After placing the image as normal, I have tried embedding it, tracing it, expanding it, etc and can't seem to be able to make any changes at all to this. I have tried it with a PNG file and an AI file. I have tried other logos and am having the same problem. I assume maybe it has to do with my settings but I can't seem to figure out what's going on.

Two things I see:

  • In the View menu, turn off Overprint Preview
  • Right now you are in Isolation mode for just the one path. Can you go back to the Group so we can see that? Or are you just trying to scale this one small element?

Hi Krista,

The reason it’s hard to see what you have now is that we can’t see the Control panel or the Properties panel or even the Appearance panel.

You have your Selection tool, but the Anchor points are still showing.

Did you expand it after doing Image Trace?

Deselect, then select again with the black arrow Selection tool.

You might also try the Scale tool. “S” is the shortcut. Double-click it and turn on Preview.
