Maybe it's just me, but I have never used Points as unit in the 20+ years I have been using illustrator.
I use Inches. occationally i get documents in CM and now a days I often work in Pixels. But Never Points. (save for Font size)
It would be nice if we could change the default unit for the print tab.
while that Might be true, it misses the point. We're not simply asking HOW to make Illustrator better for ourselves we're asking that they FIX it for everyone for now and always on items that Don't and Never made sense.

There are a few relating to document profiles and default settings already if you wish to vote for those instead.

I did edit the Print.ai file,
Which one do you edit?
Should be the one in your Application support folder in your user folder.
Not the one in the application folder in the Support files.

I firstly did the one in Application support folder. Useless.
I'm on Windows, the folder is :
C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 28 Settings\en_US\x64\New Document Profiles
I then tried the other one in Support files. Same.

Those presets display millimetres because that's the setting in those document profiles. This is how Illustrator is supposed to work. If you can't edit those document profiles, or you can but the window still shows a different unit, there is some bug that needs to be resolved with your installation.

Okay, thank you at least I'm now sure I did what I was supposed to do.

I just read this whole thread, and as a UX person, I fully agree this should be an option you can change in the preferences, so that it's your default, application-wide. I also struggle with this and right now somwhow my artboards are in pts and I never use them. Nor do I ever hyphenate and have to change that in the paragraph tab in every document. I mean, if I was editing a book, maybe, but then I would be using In-Design. Why make me go to a forum and then have to find some file and change it there? and then do I have to rinse and repeat with application updates?

I agree it's an awkward process, but once you do it, it's done. As long as you let the CC app import settings with each update, you shouldn't have to do it again.

Illustrator isn't InDesign or a word processor, as such, Hyphonate should have been defaulted off since the beginning. My guess is, it was default on 30 years ago to be like "look what we can do".
As for points, until grade schools default to teaching kids Points instead of cm/in, no one will use it. There is no need to be stubborn about it, just drop it. I gaurantee, anyone that uses points will understand. Like Latin, it's a dead language. No one will fight you to make it the default. (imagine that!)

Which version are you using? Maybe you download the current one and check that Hyphenate thing. Personally I do not get why one would turn Hyphenate off by default.
As for Points vs. Millimetres: which language do you have installed? Which New document profiles are you using? As for switching defaults: yes, everyone will fight you. I have seen too many defaults switched in this forum.

For some reason I thought one of the latest updates did turn hyphonate off by default. but I could be wrong. I've learned to live with it. It's one of those things us designers get to complain about every time we use a paragraph box.
As for default measurements, as a Canadian in my 40's I'm used to both Metric and Imperial measurements. Paper here is generally in inches because of our proximity to the USA, so that's my go to. But I understand the rest of the world uses metric.
What part of the world uses points? I'm currious to know who'd fight me/us on this.
Perhaps that's the "simple" solution. when installing it should ask you right there, what Country are you in. Then show us the defaults to that country but like a Smart watch you can Edit those defaults. (miles/km, lb/kg)
Again in Canada we are messed up becuase of our neighbour to the south. must of us use km and lb.

It is turned off in the latest versions.

That is not a simple solution, because nobody wants to do that right after installing. People don't even like the What's new box ...
If you want to configure everything, just use the New document profiles.
If you just want millimetres, install the English UK version. That's what I'm currently using and it's set up to mm.
If French Canadian is set up in the wrong way, then maybe post a bug on https://illustrator.uservoice.com
BTW: this is the community forum. If you want to post a feature suggestion, then please use the uservoice.

For me and the type of design I do, I'm often not designing large tracts of copy, like in columns or whole pages. I'm designing headlines, subheads, titles and other copy more that I would never hyphenate. So I want to be able to choose and keep it that way. 🙂
