Changing Side Scroll Direction Illustrator Only

Explorer ,
Jan 10, 2020 Jan 10, 2020

When I click command+mouse scroll the direction sideways is opposite of any other adobe program. Illustrator scrolls left while photoshop and in design scroll right. This has been a real issue when using them interchangably. A universal direction change will not fix the issue as it will just make the other programs flip as well. I have tried flipping universally and it didn't work.

I'm working on a mac.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I would request if you can share a few more details and try the steps below:

  1. The exact version of Illustrator and macOS.
  2. If you have the 2020 version of Illustrator, would you mind resetting the preferences for Illustrator and see if that makes the difference. To reset the preference please follow the steps below:

  • Close Illustrator.
  • Click on the Finder icon on the dock, choose Go on the top> Go To Folder.
  • In the Go To Folder dialog box, type "~/Library". Click Go.
  • Open the Preferences Folder > rename the Illustrator  24 Settings folder to Illustrator  24 Settings folder.old
  • Under Preferences, Open Adobe folder and rename Adobe Illustrator folder to Adobe Illustrator.old
  • Go back to library->open caches->rename  com.adobe.illustrator to com.adobe.illustrator.old
  • Go back to library->open application support-> open adobe->rename the Illustrator  24 folder to Illustrator  24 folder.old

Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. This way all your old settings will be saved in .old folders and Illustrator will recreate new folders with default settings.

Regards

Rishabh

Hello Rishabh,

I'm not seeing the settings file you are referring to. Can you give me the exact path once you go into the app folder?

I'm running AdobeACE 2.20.02 in Illustrator and Catalina on Mac

You don't go into the app folder but rather from Finder repeat the list given. You need to get to your user library folder which is hidden on never versions of the OS like the one you are running.

Hello,

I re-named both files and the scroll still moves in the opposite direction as the other programs.

I have found the issue to the problem with no solutions. On a mac laptop using 2020 adobe software and a PC mouse, Illustrator scrolls sideways inverted to the rest of the programs. This has been tested and repeated using different pc mouses, different mac laptops of different versions, and on mohavi and Catalina. All result in the same issue. This does not happen with a mac mouse on the same computers with the same software. The only solution to horizontal scrolling is a universal fix on the mac, and it only flips the issue on the programs. Please fix. I’d like a confirmation response from Adobe to let me know you are aware and tryring to resolve this issue. Thank you.

I have been having this same problem for many years. I've had this problem on 3 different Macbook Pros, using different Adobe accounts, using all different versions of Illustrator over the years. Some were brand new laptops with a brand new Adobe account and had the problem immediately. This never used to be a problem and I'm not sure what happened.

Hello @Luke2377953400vb,

Would you mind sharing more details, like the version of the OS/Illustrator, if you're using a tablet/pen input device and a small screen recording of the problem (if possible), so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

This issue has been present for every OS and Illustrator for the last 6 years. Anytime you are using a PC mouse on a mac laptop, Illustrator side scross the opposite way every other adobe program does. This has been replicated on multiple mac laptops. Currently there is only a mac setting to universally switch direction. The solution would be to allow a horizontal direction switch on specific programs in Adobe, or to fix the bug being caused by pc mouses.

Hello @tyb18686155,

Would you mind sharing more details, like the exact make/model of your mouse, the macOS/Illustrator version, the mouse settings used, and a screen recording of the problem, including whether this happens with other third-party apps as well, so I can check it with the team?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

This issue can be replicated with a standard dell wired mouse. Use any of the illustrator versions since the thread was opened in 2020 on any of the Operating systems from then. I am current on both illustrator and mac os system. I'm not going to take a video showing a moving mouse icon as I don't think it represents the issue very well. You have a code issue in Illustrator that inverts the "command + scroll on mouse" Just copy over the code from photoshop and we can be done with this thing.

Thanks for sharing the details. I tested this on my end using a PC Logi mouse on a Mac and couldn’t replicate the behavior you described.

To help us investigate further, could you please provide a screen recording showcasing the issue in Illustrator? This will allow me to log a detailed report with the product team for further investigation.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Anubhav

You hit command and use the scroll wheel on a dell mouse to scroll sideways on adobe products. Scrolling up in illustrator goes right. In all other programs up goes left. I have a new macally wired mouse and 3 different dell mouses all doing it. This has occured on every illustrator and mac os update for about 5 years. This has been an issue on two seperate macbook laptops of different model types. I'm currently running the newest versions of illustrator on sequoia 15.2.

Hello @tyb18686155,

Thanks for your detailed explanation. I was able to replicate the behavior on my end now. I’ll pass this information to the product team and check if there’s an existing ticket for this issue. If not, I’ll make sure to raise one for further investigation.

I appreciate your patience and the time you took to explain this clearly. I’ll keep you posted once I have an update.

Best,

Anshul
