created a shape (drew a bear walking), I then created a background of various rectangles in different gradients to color it in, tried using clipping mask to have the rectangles fill into the bears shapes but it leaves most of the interior of the bear completely white,

made the bear a compound path and it fits over the other layer of colors, any solutions that do not require me to redraw everything?

If I'm understanding correctly, your goal is to have the bear filled with various triangle gradients? Group the gradients together. Send them to the Back of the bear shape. Select the bear shape, make sure it has no fill or stroke and that it is truly on top of the grouped gradients. Now select the bear and gradients and create a mask.
