Create an Outline separation between two shapes/objects?

I'm trying to design something but I can't for the life of me figure out how do something nor do I know the correct wording/term for what I'm trying to do which makes looking it up really hard. I'm trying to place one object into another one but make still seem legible by seperating it from the second object its placed into. I wish to do this by using Object #1's outline and using it to hide/push away from Object #2.

Here's a close example to what I'm talking about notice how the obects inside the flage has an outline thats separtating it from the flag it's inside of? I want to do something like that. I could just use the erase tool and do it manually but I want know/learn how to do it the right way and make it more clean than it would if I did it myself. Even just telling me the correct phrasing for what I'm attemping will help alot.

What you can do is select all the parts of the drawing, then use Object > Path > Offset path. This creates a duplicate and offsets it.

While it is still selected, give it a different color. You can then subtract the offset path from the other objects using the Pathfinder panel.

If you want an even, coloured outline, try the tip from Monika.
If you want a ‘transparent’ outline, try this tip (with a knockout group):
