Creating a LOT of text on a spiral

Community Beginner ,

Hi all,

I have 50,000 words that I need to put on a really long spiral, the text will start at the outtermost line and conclude towards the end of the spiral.

Legibility is not an issue here.

I have attached two artworks on how I approached it, I created a spiral of 75 lines and then made that a typable object, but the moment I bring in all of the text, Illustrator crashes.

Would anyone please have some guidance or advice how I could solve this?

Thank you

Which version is this?

If it's a version prior to CS6 or your computer only has a few GB RAM, then it might just be a memory issue. If it is a current version and is otherwise working well and has been restarted very recently, then you might have reached the limit of text on a path.In case you also have InDesign, you might try if it is more tolerant.

I was just trying to do it in InDesign but how would I go about creating a spiral?

I tried using Libraries to bring the text path from Illustrator to InDesign but that just ends up as an image and not a typable path.

Any advise will be highly appreciated.

Thank you

as spiral is a quite simple line with empty attributes, you can just copy/paste it from Illustrator to InDesign. If all's good, you can use and edit it like an internally created path

also, you can divide the spiral for shorter parts using Scissors tool. The only problem this case will be to define the proper text parts length

You're right but since all circles will be different sizes especially the innermost circle so it's very hard to calculate exactly how much text I should put on each path.

Thank you for your feedback though!
