Critical Crash on Type Tool in Illustrator v30.0 (Clean Win 11 + RTX 3070 / Ryzen 5900X)

Illustrator v30.0 crashes immediately whenever the Type Tool is selected or text is edited. Downgrading to version 29.8.3 resolves the issue entirely on the exact same hardware.

System Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 11 (Clean Installation).

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor.

  • RAM: 96 GB.

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070.

  • Driver Version: 581.80 (Clean install).

  • Illustrator Version: 30.0

  • Plugins: None.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Launch Illustrator v30.0.

  2. Create a new document or open an existing one.

  3. Select the Type Tool (T).

Observed Behavior:

  • Scenario A (GPU Performance ON): The application crashes instantly to the desktop (silent crash).

  • Scenario B (GPU Performance OFF): The application throws an "Unknown Error [PARM]" and fails to create the text object.

Troubleshooting Attempted (Unsuccessful):

  1. Reset Preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift).

  2. Cleared Adobe Font Cache and Windows Font Cache manually.

  3. Performed a clean installation of NVIDIA Drivers (v581.80).

  4. Tested on both new blank files and legacy files.

Workaround: I have downgraded to Illustrator v29.8.3. It works perfectly with no crashes.

Hello @Alexolf,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your observations. That does seem troubling. As this typically occurs when using the Type tool, it may indicate that a font problem is present. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared in this help article (https://adobe.ly/47ZrRIN) and checking if it helps? Also, try the suggestions shared here (https://adobe.ly/4829dQk) and let us know how it goes.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions.

I have reviewed the articles, but I want to emphasize two critical points
that rule out local font corruption:

1.

*This is a completely clean Windows installation.* There are no
accumulated old or corrupt fonts in the system.
2.

*The exact same set of fonts works perfectly in Illustrator v29.8.3.* If
a font were corrupt, it would likely crash v29 as well.

Since the issue is isolated *only to v30.0* and v29 works stable on the
same machine with the same fonts and drivers, this indicates a regression
in the v30 Text Engine or GPU handling, not a user-side font issue.

Please pass this information to the engineering team, as this seems to be a
software bug in the new release.
