cs5 crashes on launch

I just installed cs5 and every time it loads it crashes on launch. Illustrator and inDesign are doing the same thing but photoshop works normally. I removed them and then installed it again without any luck. I am not really sure how to fix this and was unable to find any useful information. If anyone has any ideas it would be great.

mac specs are

mac pro

snow leopard

duel-core intel xeon

2.66ghz

2 processors with a total of 4 cores.

4 gig of ram.

Checked the min specs and as far as I can see it should be fine.

You say it worked fine for two days then it started crashing and does that tell you something?

I would think back to the time right before it started crashing and see what I had been doing right before this started to happen.

You haven't customized your system, but have you used any fonts you did not use before that that time between the time you installed and the first crash occurred.

Did you load or use any free fonts? Did you use any plug ins say that came from CS 4 or earlier, any scripts? any haxies? any updates? did you launch any programs that you did not use prior to that moment.

Yes I think it is your fault because I think you changed something…well I am pretty sure you did. You might not like to see this in writing but that is my honest opinion. Like the OP there is something .you are not telling us. It simply was not working and then without you doing anything it just stopped working.

That for one is not helpful it tells us absolutely nothing about what might have contributed and something cause this to happen. It just did not happen.

Does that  make sense to you?

Check it out if you did not do this before create a new user, log in to the new user and launch AI, does it launch?

Again tell us about your set up something other than it just started cashing.

You must have confused me with someone else. I'm not the one who said that it worked for two days and started crashing again. I know people often don't tell or forget what they may have been doing to create the problem. In such case, you'll find their statements inconsistent. And, if I didn't like to see what you wrote, I wouldn't be replying to your posts. Sorry, but you've been very judgmental from the start anyway, without noticing what's being said or asked. You have not answered my question either (how would you use British English on a Mac with US keyboard layout?)

Here is once again, my version of CS5 issues:

I downloaded trial versions of some CS5 applications.

Installed them on my Mac (MBP, Core i5, 2.53GHz, 4Gb RAM).

I already had some CS3 applications on my Mac.

I never have more than Absolutely Required Mac OS and Adobe fonts on my system.

After installing CS5, when I launched the applications for the first time, all of them launched except Illustrator.

I then repaired permissions, searched Adobe website for help and support docs and carried out every applicable action but Illustrator never launched.

Throughout this, I kept checking other CS3 and CS5 applications. They all worked without any problems.

When I got to forums, I read a post and created a new user account on my Mac. At last Illustrator CS5 launched for the first time.

It was clear that there's something wrong with my old user-account settings (preferences).

Then, in order to findout the reasons behind my problem, I did what you may have read in a previous post.

Since then, I know that if I want to use British English, customised Numbers, Currency and Time formats, I have to use Illustrator CS3, until Adobe fixes CS5 issues.

Other participants to this discussion have also confirmed that this what I have found out is correct. If you can help all of us with some better work around, we all will highly appreciate it.

In my previous pot I was referring to Marco who posted previous to me.

So if you are confused is that you are not thorough when reading the forum.

As far as customisation to the system as to language time dates and etc I just did so you will notice the way Customisation is spelled.

Spell checking says this is correct as opposed to the U.S. English way customization. Which spell check says is incorrect.

I have Islamic time selleted Pound Sterling etc.

No crashes of CS 5 ? If it works on a new user account I can tell you Adobe cannot fix something that is not broken.

What you should test to see if what I tell you is correct is to start to customise the new user account. But you do this in a trouble shoot mode that is after each setting you change you then launch AI to make certain it is not crashing. If you make a setting and it does crash AI then you found the specific setting. To make sure there is not another setting change that setting back make certain AI launches, if it does then change the other settings they will probably not crash AI, but there is always the possibility that one of other settings is having the same effect. But if none of the settings on the new user account crashes AI then yes there is something on your current user account causing this, it can be a corrupt font, like a euro font or even a corrupt colour profile or a third party software that is conflicting. I am positive you have third party software not just the Apple System and Adobe Applications.

So you have to tell us what you have and what you did to those applications. But something happened and if it is a corruption of your user account Adobe will not be able to fix it unless you tell it what that corruption is because they will have to be able to reproduce it. Eve if they reproduce it, if it is caused by something in another program they might not be able to correct it it may be up to the third party developer. Does this make sense to you.

So if you want this corrected I suggest you trouble shoot the new and old user account.

Even though, I have already carried out the steps exactly as you mentioned (please check post no.15) in a troubleshooting mode, I'll try once again with another user account and get back. However, so far CS5 is only crashing after making changes in 'Language & Text' pane of system preferences.

Other than Apple and Adobe software, there's only one major application I have. That is NeoOffice. Other than that I only have some free video players and readers. But even in a new user account, if CS5 is only crashing after System Preferences customisation, I doubt any of those apps have anything to do with it.

Font corruption is out of question for even in my system folder, I only have 17 required fonts. Including 'CS3 Required' fonts no more than 22 fonts. And, even if CS5 has brought a corrupt font with it, application launch process should at least reach the point where fonts are analysed. In my case, I don't even see the splash screen. Upon double-clicking the application icon, black and white Adobe wrist-watch icon appears, then Apple colour-wheel icon appears and then I see the crash report window.

Nevertheless, I try and get back.

Ok I will be clearer I have the Same computer as you do and i have cutomised the text and languages and guess what?

No crashes of any application on my system.

I would immediately suspect Neo Office, like it or not, if you are not a donor then it probabl,y has somethig to alter the system to inhibit the features it curtails.

I do not have Neo Office on my Mac Pro.

I have tons of applications including Office 2009 Master Collection CS 4 and CS 5, Lots of fonts and no crashes.

Again you will have to trouble shot  you will have ti turn off you customisation of the text and language then change each setting one at a time in order to find the setting that triggers the crash. But I would guess it is Neo Office or something else you are not telling us. And I do not recall ever once where there was not something else that was not mentioned.

Good luck I tired my best.

But as far as I can tell this something you are doing different than I am.

I'm having this problem with ALL CS5 apps. But it only started after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Before that, everything worked fine. I've trashed prefs, plists, validated fonts, etc. and nothing works. Here's the crash report:

After reading all these posts I will not upgrade to CS5.  I feel that when you install a product, it should work and not have all these problems and tries to "fix" it, not being able to load fonts, etc, etc.  I cannot afford to waste any more time.  I have 2 new macs and with all the problems I've had with CS4, I am too frustrated to go through all this again with CS5. 

I did find that with my 2 new macs, that the CS4 problems are different.  With the one with the i5 processor, CS4 works ok with only minor glitches which are frustrating, but allow me to work.  My other mac, a 27 inch which I bought to be my main studio computer, has an i7 processor.  CS4 simply does not work with it, no matter how many installs, no font installs, etc, etc I do.  Discounting the constant crashes and loss of work, layers in Photoshop doesn't work in this mac and I use layers for every thing I work on.

I am really fed up with the fact that Adobe products and Snow Leopard just do not work together.  I had hoped that CS5 would fix it all, especially since the problems with CS4 were not fixed, but that's certainly not the case.

I am still amazed that a user would leave on their computer software that they do not need regardless of wether it is going to effect the stability of software they really need.

It often turns out that they tell us that they have removed all fonts only later to find out, oh yes it was a font problem, how does this work?They did not quite give us the correct and complete information, and by us I mean the contributors on this forum, why this has to be explained is also questionable.

Then it usually also turns out they have thee beta software or some free stuff again such as open source which they are warned is not complete and may cause instability. But in their minds why would this be an issue.

You can't get them to tell you the pertinent information because they fear they will be responsible for the situation so they tell you what they want totell.

There is no doubt in my experience that you have installed on both systems software that does not belong there and so why not tell us or better yet just get rid of it? And enjoy all the benefits of CS 5. And be done with these problems.

As you can see from this thread those problems can be avoided.

BTW using Apples migrate assistant only drags the problems over from one Mac to the other.

I had not installed ANY software other than the mac software that came on it.  I installed Adobe CS4 and IMMEDIATELY had problems with it on BOTH computers.  I noticed the problems immediately when working with both Illustrator and Photoshop.  I contacted tech support with Adobe with no help from them.  For installing new software on a new computer, one should not have to go through all these hoops to get it to work and meanwhile loosing about 2 weeks of work time, which includes numerous calls to Adobe and Apple and the wait times then the lost time due to lost work because of Photoshop crashes. 

And I did not have free bata software - I paid $$$$ for it from Adobe.  And if CS4 didn't work and everyone is having these problems with CS5 - NO, I'm not going to upgrade to more problems.

Like I said - I have installed no other software or plug-in's and I resent the fact that you assume that I have and am not saying so.  After working PC's for years and having them get bogged down with stuff, I am determined to keep only the minimum of what I need on my macs - which is Adobe. 

So why don't you quit "assuming" because it is making an ass out of you and not me.

Let'sseeif i am assuming anything , create a new user and log into that new user and see if you can launch AI CS 4?

BTW if you noticed it or not this is a thread about CS 5 and all the users here now understand their problems.

Also as I pointed out I have experience with postings exactly like your's an always it has been one user error and two they have never ever once lived to the condition that the have done nothing but just installed Adobe products not once…there is always after two months of postings…oh yes I forgot yo mention such and such do you think that would have something to do with it.

Licensing I understand issues, language I understand there can be issues but one or two people using the same computers as everyone else experience crashes while no one else is then I question what do you have installed.

First off the bat you installed the system but we do not know how you went about or if it came installed and how did you configure you internet connection,then are you certain you have no Microsoft software installed did you do as above customise your system preferences.

Regardless of what you write here I know that is no the whole story there is definitely something else going on.

I have been using a MacPro and CS 4 since the day it came out and I have encounter a bug or two but in all that time have never had a problem launching AICS4 except twice because I used a corrupt font cleaning the Font Cache and deleting the fonts and preferences and rebooting did the trick.

I used Leopard and now Snow Leopard all is fine.

And I have software on my computer that should cause problems but in spite of that CS 4 is running perfect along with CS 5.

So now we have a big difference in our experiences.

Which once again leads me to believe you're leaving out information actually you haven't really given us any information.

For instance according to you you have two computers with the system and nothing else on the computer, no other data, is that true?

And CS 4 won't launch even though you have a perfectly clean system and CS 4 and only CS 4 and Snow Leopard installed nothing else.

The hardware isa standalone iMac nothing but let's say a printer attached? Oh wait no printer since that would require a printer driver and you do not have other software installed.

No Tablet of course etc.

I mostly agree with frustratedadobeuser. The last time I added to this discussion was on 1st June. I stopped coming back, for it feels like wasting many more hours.

To make sure that I was really following Wade's suggestions correctly, and that I wasn't HIDING or forgetting to tell anything to this forum, I actually performed a clean install of Leopard on my mac once again. This was the last time for I had already done more system installations, just to fix CS5 problems, than in my twelve years of Mac experience.

After Clean Install, without even touching anything else, I installed Illustrator CS5, first thing. Guess what... the problem was still there. Illustrator would work only if I didn't customise the Language & Text preferences. If I removed thousand separator from numbers, Illustrator wouldn't launch. Changed the settings back to default, it would work.

So, I guess, Wade's assumptions that everyone's coming to these forums for a pastime or that they have some hidden agendas is really uncalled for.

They do not actually ask or seek help they just want to express anger and not necessarily just at Adobe.

As far as absarahmed is concernd pretty much the same thing you ask what did you or install nothing is the answer and then well I customised the system preferences and has a open source unfinished software installed at that and can't figure out why Adobe does not fix this.

I pointed out it works on my MacPro fine even after customising the prefferences but I do not have that open source application installed on my computer.

I asked if it might occur to mind that this could be the problem.

Since that makes sense…they offered no response.

Yes my conclusion is you are here to express anger.

And you are correct no one here is going to be able to assist you since you really do not seem to want to be assisted.

Once again you are assuming incorrectly, which you seem to make a habit of.  I have asked for help on numerous forums as well as Adobe support and received no help.  I just made a comment and you started the ball rolling with your arrogant comments.  I am very frustrated with my problem and feel that Adobe has devoted all their efforts to the PC versions and not to the mac versions.  I have heard some good things about CS5 from PC users who love it.  You haven't offered any constructive help, and I've explained how my macs are set up the same with the only difference being the processors.  I have no more time to waste with your posts.

It's a painful fact that Adobe is extremely slow at providing support for Macs. Isn't it a shame that Adobe took ten years to make native products for Mac OS X, which is CS5. Yet they still didn't get it right.

As far as PC users are concerned, most of them can't even imagine what a 'trouble-free' computing experience feels like. They consider it OK if they have to re-install Windows once a year. They feel like heaven if their hard-drives don't completely crash in a couple of years time. That's why, at least I wouldn't be surprised if positive CS5 reviews are coming from PC users.

Talking about myself, I kept using older versions of products, after I tried CS and only upgraded when CS2 came out with less bugs. Same thing I did lately. Kept waiting and kept using CS3, even though CS4 allowed better workflows. Why? because Adobe didn't bother making CS4 64-bit.

Now, after spending days trying-out 64-bit, CS5 products, I'm back to CS3.

Creating new user account

Un-installing third-party and open-source software

Having ZERO fonts but those which system needs to run itself

Performing a clean install

and I don't remember what else...

...has not impressed CS5 enough so it can run on my Mac properly.

I can only hope that someone at Adobe is reading our posts and, without this thought that there's something we're hiding from them. And I hope that they do something so I can upgrade to CS5 soon. No doubt, Apple has really spoilt its users and others are perhaps struggling to meet Mac users' expectations.

Having been a PC user for many, many years, I have had the problems you mentioned with hard drive crashes, etc which is why I switched to Mac. Now its a new problem with Adobe.

I did post on another forum for Photoshop about my problems as Photoshop is just as big a problem, if not more.  An employee of Adobe came back and asked for specifics to the problems I was having and then told me that it was obvious I had not installed the updates as that would fix my problems.  I installed the updates and not one bit of change to any of the problems I was having.  At least an employee reads the posts and replies, but the solution is just not there.

Guess I will wait on another update.

I know this discussion was on CS5.  I stated in my initial post that after reading the problems people were having with CS5, I decided not to upgrade because of the problems I was having with CS4 and I was tired of dealing with them.  If CS5 were working perfectly and would eliminate the problems I am having with CS4, I would upgrade immediately.  I think the problem is with the i7 processor - its the latest one with mac and evidently Adobe isn't compatible with it since it works almost OK with the i5 processor.

But, let me count the ways I can say this - I bought 2 macs at the same time. The apple store installed SL and Safari and set up my email using mac Mail.  I brought the computers home and Installed CS4 - nothing else because I want to keep the computers clean. Oh, yes, I do have an Epson printer driver but have no problems printing.  Should I uninstall my printer to get CS4 to work?  I should be able to use a printer with Adobe products. I do not have any Microsoft installed either. 

On one mac with a i5 processor, I have very few problems, just annoying glitches but on the one with the i7 processor I have major problems with CS4 and the computers are loaded identically with software. I did install some fonts on the i5, but like I said, that one is working ok. I did not say AI would not launch, I said there were major problems.

And once again, you are assuming - you are assuming that I have no experience.  You are wrong there as well. Your comments don't sound like you want to help but sound arrogant, are very condescending and make you sound like a jerk, but then I don't want to assume that you are one.

I finally solved my problem by removing every single font and adding them back one by one. The font that was the culprit was a paid font that had been validated in Font Book and other utilities.

Btw, CS3, Illustrator CS4 and other Adobe tools had no problem with this font. Neither did any of the Apple apps. Only CS5.

I'm also not impressed with Adobe support. I spent two hours on the phone with them, being passed from one person to another. They finally said it was an Apple problem, told me to call Apple, and refused to help any further.

You could share the name of the font it might or mightnot help others but is stillworth knowing.

Also I understand how it seems odd that a font might only effect one version of a software but that can happen because there may have been corrections made to the new version and where that might not seem right either keep in mind that a corrupt font can cause problems with documents in the future like not be able to open them or the art is completely corrupt.

So it might be that CS 5 has shown you a problem that you are better off knowing today then tomorrow.

(On Mac Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.5.8) Illustrator CS5 would not launch after re-installing the entire Design Premium Suite. It would crash after splash screen appeared, but during the plugin etc loads. A plugin called kuler.aip was the culprit; after removing that all seems to be well. Well, with Illustrator, at least. I've had nothing but problems with the whole suite of software (Photoshop and InDesign freezing and/or crashing when handling type, crashing when printing, etc etc etc), but that is for other forums. My faith in Adobe has dwindled to none after this CS5 release, which has cost me days of lost productivity and many files that had to be painstakingly recreated in CS3.

I agree and still have not been able to get Illustrator 4 to work properly on a quad core.  So far its working ok on the duo core.  I stand by my earlier statement that I will not upgrade to 5 because of all the problems that everone is having.  sange3632 your post just verifies that there are major problems with the entire suite.

It is inexcusable that products this expensive won't even open without crashing. I'm extremely disappointed with Adobe. I should be able to install an application and have it *work* without having to scour message boards and spend hours figuring out the problem. Other applications just work when I install them—why should Adobe apps be any different?

After fixing InDesign and Illustrator and Photoshop (no simple feat) I launched Soundbooth for the first time today and it won't open without crashing. Unbelievable.

I just switched to CS 5 and first thing off the bat, Illustrator crashed on startup.

Having been though this before I began to find which font was causing the crash.

After a pleasant evening of moving fonts, restarting my machine then launching Illustrator, the process of elimination narrowed it down to fonts installed by Ericom's PowerTerm terminal emulator that I use all day long.

Bummer!

Now to find another emulator to use because without its fonts PowerTerm doesn't work at all.

And they call this progress!

lyle do yourself and the developer a favor and report it they might be able to fix it but thy won't if they do not know it is a problem.
