How can I divide an arc or a curve into equal parts along its length?
A segment is the part of a path between two anchor points.
You could try plugins like CADtools. CAD tools will also just add points, like so:

I tried the divide script. After pressing the OK button, nothing happens. I tried it on multiple curves and lines. I also selected on curve and ran it but nothing happens after the OK button of the script interface box.

I just tried it in CC 2017.1 and it works.

I select on curve, I go to file>scripts>other scripts. Then I go to the folder and click the divide script. It asks me for number of segments. I enter 5. I press ok. Nothing happens. My curves remain the same. No new group formed of broken curves or like that.

The script adds anchor points.
Can you check if anchor points have been added?

I deleted the old curves. I started off with a new one. It's adding a lot of unnecessary anchor points. I asked for five, now it has many including the original. I just want division into five equal parts. It's a basic, primitive function I believe. It gets so frustrating sometimes to struggle so hard to do something as basic as this and then realize that illustrator doesn't have the functionality. . Even a free software like sketchup has this ability to divide a line/curve into any number of parts quickly and I'm surprised why this expensive software doesn't have this feature.

The script divides segments, not paths. In your example points cannot be added at random places, because then it might be impossible to shape it.

That's really sad to know. Now what's the difference between a segment and a path? Moreover, what method I can employ now? I am currently exporting the curve as dwg, dividing it in autocad, then opening the dwg again in Illustrator as a cumbersome workaround.
