Dropshadow with gradient

I need to put a dropshadow on an element that had a gradient that goes to clear.  when I do it the clear gets darker.  the dropshadow is at the top of the element and the shadow is at the bottom and to the left.  

doing a second element under it wont work because the color i have to use in it affects the gradient.

any ideas?
