That looks like a gradient.
To apply that to a text, you need to select the text with the selection tool, then in the Appearance panel createa new fill for the text and then apply the gradient to that.

I dont think I explained it properly. I was wondering how to apply a different gradient to another part of the text. for instancee, one colour for 'net' and another for 'king'.

You absolutely need that as a graphic tyle/text effect?

WIth outlined text this wouldn't be an issue.
With separate text objects for each of the gradients this would work as well.
It would get very tricks if you want it on one text oject, editable and with two gradients, but I think it should still be possible, but you cannot have other effects on it.
