When I create text and then try to add an effect to the text like say a drop shadow, the options are grayed out. Why would that be?

Instead of selecting the text with the text tool, try selecting the whole object with the Selection tool.

ahmons,

Is that (also) the case if you select the text with the Selection Tool (rather than the Type Tool)?

Are you talking about highlighting/selecting single words or parts of a text string inside a text object?

In this case most of the available Illustrator effects will not work without applying tricky workarounds.

As for the drop shadows: I suggested a workaround about 10 or 15 years ago. Wonder if the Forum Search may still find it.

Kurt,

15 years ago I found out that old threads really died, falling into the abyss after no more than 1 year (later it was even shorter) after the latest post, which was obviously also the last post.

I managed to keep some important threads alive by adding new posts before the deadline, up to the forum change in 2009; after that, surviving and later threads have been and will be kept alive until someone decides to let them die or till the end of time, whichever occurs first.

Alas, I am afraid I have no recollection of that important thread; I sincerely apologize.

Thanks for this insight, Jacob. I did not know that ...

I have some sample files that show the 15 year old workarounds. May post one of them tomorrow.

You are welcome, Kurt.

In 2004, when I found out, I started an archive with web pages and considered uploading it for general availability, but never found the time and eventually realized the unmanagableness (at least for me) of the task (it seems to amount to some 7,500 threads). In any case, most of them would have been outdated long ago, apart from certain ones (especially) including those with jokes and banter.

The ones kept alive were much fewer, of course.

All you need to do, Jacob, is to reply to a decade old thread once a day. For twenty years.

The thread is still there, but it probably contains a broken link.

Struggling with type effects- CS4 vs Freehand

Although I don't know if that is what ahmons is going to do, here is the sample file (suppose in AI 10 format).

So we were on this side of the forum change, Kurt, in the months where I was all too busy with general forum matters and all too absent here.
