In the past, when running "Save As" only the title was selected, not the extension. This makes renaming the file fast and easy. In AI 2020 the ENTIRE name is selected, including the extension. That means the user must manually deselect the extension. Please fix this Adobe! This is a standard interface feature on Mac. Don't know about PC and don't care.

Thanks @Ton Frederiks
I'm on 11.3.1.
Interestingly, if I select another format such as ".ait" the selection changes:
Thought it might be because it was an untitled file, but it works the same with a saved ai file.

Ray,
I'm still on 11.2 for the moment, but assuming the same behavior in 11.3.1, yes, the entire file name, including extension, is selected. Enter the new file name, without extension, and it will save as the same file type as the original, automatically adding the extension. You don't need to deselect the extension. If you want to change file type, just enter the file name without extension and select the format.
Peter

I struggled with it before a happy accident!
