Eraser tool will not resize

I have tried adjusting it in the tool options dialogue box, double clicking the tool, and using the brackets. The numbers say the size is adjusted, but when I use it, it is still way too large. I have been previously using this tool in the same AI file I am currently working in. I have even reset the tool and it is still not resizing. Help!

I just fixed it. It had something to do with the specific shape I was trying to erase. Once I deleted the shape and remade it in the same spot. the eraser worked fine.

Because my original shape had a stroke of 10, the eraser would only erase in 10--even if the shape was not selected.
