Error while saving templates in Illustrator:"You don’t have permission to save in this location"

I just updated AI yesterday (I know a little late) and it seems to have lost my saved templates. When I try to create a new template file (create new artboard with the right dimensions then go to save template) It opens the Adobe folder that the templates are saved in. Makes sense. Though it will not allow me to save there. I had no issues before the update. Am I missing something I should do?

Before you ask, yes, I did google it and I can't find a fix for it. All I want is to make this the default template whenever a new file is opened up.

Thanks for trying that. Looks like your account doesn't have Admin privileges? Please try following these steps and let us know how it goes:

  • Go to C:\Program Files
  • Right click "Adobe" folder.
  • Select Properties > Security, and click Edit.
  • In the Permissions dialog, select your user name.
  • In the Permissions area, de-select the Deny checkbox.
  • Click OK twice.
  • Then Restart Illustrator and try to save templates.

Hi there,

While updating applications, sometimes the permissions on application folders get affected. Please try following the steps shared here (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/kb/preferences-folder-read-only-error.html) and let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Srishti

I have already done this, and I have nothing under the deny collum. This is not the issue.

The picture I tried to attach last time didn't seem to want to add. I'll try again.

Hi Kustenklar,

Below is what I found worked for me. I hope it helps you.

- In the Applications folder, go to Adobe Illustrator and right click or control click to bring the file options dialog.

- Click 'Get Info'

- At the bottom right find and click the lock icon to unlock permission settings. Put in your user name and password.

- Click 'Sharing & Permissions' drop down tab if not already done.

- Find your user name and change the privileges to 'Read & Write'.

- If you do not already see your user name, click the '+' icon and find your user name under 'Users & Groups'

and add yourself to the permissions list and make sure the permissions are set to 'Read & Write'.

- Then, next to the +/- icons at the bottom left is an 'Actions' tab. CLick on it and select 'Apply to Enclosed Items'.

- Finally, click the Lock icon to save the changes.

- If Illustrator is currently open, restart it and see you can now save a template directly to the Ai Templates Folder from Illustrator.

Let me know how if this works for you or if you have any questions.

Thanks! That helped me setup the template I needed to save immediately, but do you know if there are settings to change so I don't have to do that every time?

I know this thread is probably dead but I'm getting the same error, the drag and drop you suggested but I've set everyone to read & write the Ai folder, restarted Ai multiple times and I still get the error. Any other tips?

Dragging it in works, but also doesn't actually show up on my saved templates in Ai... strange I'm working on 2022 Ai now too.

What you are describing are templates (documents with textboxes, logos, artwork), saved in the Templates folder. They show up when you choose File > New from Template...

They don't show up in the New Documents (therefore you will need to create New Document Profiles)

How do we create New Document Profiles?.. I just want Blank documents already set up in A5 and A6 as I commonly use them. I am not going through all the effort of saying File > New from Template. If I can click A4 and A3 under the New Document box - why can't I add other sizes there as well.
