Hello, since update (CC 2018), when I do file>export> as jpeg, the file location is the last used and not the same as the AI file just open.
This can seems not important for you, but I do this 40x per day and now it's a waste of time.
I have to browse all the folders on local network .. to find my folder and it's boooooring.
There is no setting for this in preferences.
Thank you for your help.
(we are a infographist team and all complains about this.)
We have a fix and is available in the pre-release build. Please visit http://adobe.ly/1Q3rCPI and get the latest build titled Adobe Illustrator CC 22.0.2 - Hot Fix.

I Tried to replicate the same issue on my end, however, I was unable to do so. Please try resetting preferences and launch the application again.

Hello, I deleted Settings folder then restart illustrator, there is no change.

I seem to remember this was a preference setting in previous versions. The choices for exporting were to remember either the folder location or the export file format, but not both. I chose format. The dialog box always opened in the folder of the .ai file with the correct format (.png) always selected. This changed only with the CC 2018 update.

where can you find this preference? i have both 2017 and 2018 installed and behaviour seems the same to me in both (win 10)

I looked for and could not find the preference in CC 2018. The preference was set several years and probably several versions ago. I have been using Illustrator since version 1.

No.
Every version has its own preferences folder. Always. If there is no prefs folder (for whatever reason), Illustrator will create it. Always.
The folder for the installed version is definitely there. Preferences file gets written every single time when you close Illustrator. Or do you want to tell us that you not only had Illustrator installed since version 1, but that it also updated in the background and you didn't have to close it even once for 30 years?

What are you talking about?
The preference I could not find was in the Preferences dialog box. I have preference files on this computer for Illustrator versions CS5, 18, 19, 20, 21, and now 22. Every upgrade installation copies the preferences from the previously installed version.
The specific preference involved may be /SmartExportFolderPath, currently set to 0.
Thanks.

I know well all settings on illustrator and I never seen this setting (since CS3). Where I can find "SmartExportFolderPath" ? and enable it ?
Thank you.

SmartExportFolderPath is an entry in the Adobe Illustrator Prefs file in the C:\Users\(name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 22 Settings\en_US\x64 folder. Open the file in Notepad and search for the term.
This is not a recommendation. I do not know if this is the relevant setting or what effect changing the setting will have. However, if it works. please let us know.

In Adobe Illustrator Prefs file, I can only find this : (the other entry is about PDF export..)
| /SmartExportUI { | |
| /IsLayersPanelAddAssetCoachSuccess 1 | |
| /ShowLayersPanelAddAssetFTUE 1 |
I don't think this refer to saving path.

After reviewing this section, I think the appropriate setting is more likely to be
/exportFolderPath
not
/SmartExportFolderPath
The former may be for Export, the latter for Export Selection...
