File goes through the action of saving, doesn't change title or appear in finder

To begin, I have kind of an old computer. It's a MacBook Pro from 2012, running Catalina 10.15.3. I've been working on some projects outside of school because I'm bored during the quarantine. When I tried to save my progress, I titled it, set up a place for it in my documents, and hit save, but afterwards it doesn't show up and the title doesn't change. I've been trying to save it as a .ai file for hours and it's not working. Any ideas?

Catalina OS uses some new security tools that may be causing your problems, click on the link below and read the section on Security & Privacy.

Also, make sure you are updated to the latest version of Illustrator. Click on the Cloud icon at the top right corner of your screen, go to Updates.
