Fill a shape with random layout of rectangles

Hi all.

I would like to know if there is a way to generate layouts like on the picture below. What I would like to do is create a few different ones like this, but each should be different and unique. Each should be based on a rectangle as the "outside shape", and then be filled with randomised smaller rectangles & squares as below.

Is there a way? Please advise. Thanks!

Well, I'm not enough of a mathematician to give you a good answer, but it's nothing like random. This is more or less random:

The grid in the gate has (almost) exactly 1.5 times as many filled squares as empty ones, and they're arranged so that there are no intersections between horizontal and vertical openings. I haven't counted (nor will I, at least tonight!) how many openings of what length there are in which direction, but I suspect there's a pattern.
