The error implies that the fact it's a group is the issue. Does it work if you ungroup the objects?

It appears to have filled the top object. You're presumably trying to fill the 'S'. Make the S the top object and try again.

It's the z-order of the objects. In the first instance, you selected the top object (one of the flowers) to be filled. In the second, you selected the bottom object (the S).
