Flatten Transparency won't outline fonts

Flatten transparency doesn't outline fonts any more in latest illustrator. Does anyone have a workaround that doesn't include other software?

You probably checked this, but to make sure; is Convert all Text to Outlines checked in the settings?

Yep, all I get is an error...tht I have to embed first...but when I embed, it changes the font... 😞
