Free Trial - limited access to all options?

I've had a PS/LR subscription since it first became available. I'm having quite a bit of difficulty in using the free trial of Illustrator. A lot of the areas are grayed out. Do I have to wait until I start the actual month before I have access to everything? I've spent three days trying to figure out one operation with limited success. It's the 3D inflate which I think I've figured out but all of the areas under lighting are grayed out and I can't move the lighting to the center of the object I've successfully inflated...finally!
