grids...snap to

I'm talking about the Ctrl+" or View/Show Grid

draw, say, a square on your grid...

it seems that smart guides will help only if you're drawing in the vicinity of the centre of the artboard.

anywhere else on your grid, and not smart guides whatsoever...am I missing something?

do I have to create my own grids for smart guides to snap to grid?

Do you have View > Snap to Grid turned on in the your Illustrator document?
