Grouped Objects Not Moving Together

Explorer ,
Jul 08, 2025 Jul 08, 2025

I recently updated my Illustrator 2025 to the newest version - v 27.9.3. I'm not sure what happened and can't seem to find anythign on this but my grouped objects no longer move together.  When I try to slide my grouped objects around the layout, the symbols in the group seem to move separately from the overall group which is very frustrating.  Is there something I'm overlooking that I can do to stop this from happening?  I have a screen recording of an example.

I don't think there are any corrupted symbols. As far as I can see, this is just another strange behaviour in conjunction with the GPU preview.

Does using the CPU preview (instead of GPU) in the View menu mitigate the issue when moving the group with the Selection tool?

If not, can you try to move the group with the Free Transform tool and see what happens?

Kurt, you nailed it!  Changing to CPU solves the issue.  I guess, depending on the file I'm working on, I can switch back and forth between GPU and CPU as a bandaid for the time being.  I'd rather NOT have to do that, but if it solves the issue in the short term, it going to save me some frustrations for sure.  Thanks for the tip.

There are symbols among them - can you share the file?

Yes, there are symbols within the grouped object and they are the moving independently from the overall grouped object.  I have the file attached here for you to review, but I have also had teammates look at this same file and it seems to work fine for them.  The symbols move with the overal grouped object for them, just not for me, which is strange.

I keep attempting to share the file here but it's not letting me upload it.

Are any of the objects in the group locked, or are any layers locked? Is Auto-Select in the upper left corner turned on?

Thanks for the suggestions but nothing is locked in both the layers nore the group.  If they were, I think the symbols would be static as opposed to moving independently of the overall group.  With teammates trying this on their end, successfully moving as normal, it has to be something with settings on my end but I'm not finding where the issue is and why it would work for some grouped objects with symbols and not others.

Just rename the .AI file extension to .PDF

But since it is only not working for you and only with some files I would assume either a file corruption or your computer needs a restart or your Illustrator preferences need a reset or all of that.

Thank you!

I could reproduce it.

Sooooo. I could solve it for one symbol when setting it to Static. I could also "repair" it by double clicking the symbols for editing.

I would point at the symbols. Maybe you want to try and create them new. They might have become corrupted.

Hmm...strange.  I see what you are saying.  I made all 3 symbols static vs. dynamic and after doing so, they behaved as they normally should.  Unfortunately our the symbols I use daily, I need them to be dynamic.  I'm also finding it odd that the same file works differently for my teammates and myself.  It's the same file so if it's corrupted for one, it should be corrupted for all I'd think.  Sorry for all of the back and forth...just trying to puzzle this out.

No problem.

WHat you could do is try and reset your preferences. ANd also: copy all the artwork (except the symbols) over to a new file and creating new symbols in that. Does that help?

Reset my preferences and I'm still having the issue.  Tried making new symbols...same thing happens.  So very frustrating.  I've been working in Illustrator for 20 + years and have never encountered an issue like this.

I have searched and couldn't find a bug report about that. But you could report it at https://illustrator.uservoice.com

Hi @Jon26435430x8pa,

Thanks so much for reaching out and for sharing the screen recording. I tried reproducing this behavior on my end, and it works fine for me. I'm currently on the latest version of Illustrator, which is 29.6.1.

Could you please share the file with us, so we can take a closer look? Also, I recommend updating your Illustrator to the latest version and then testing if the issue still occurs. It would be helpful if you could also try the same steps in a newly created file and let me know if the problem persists there too.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

I just shared the file in the above comment with a bit more explanation.  Problem is happening on certain grouped objects but not others which I find bizzare as seen in the attached screen recording.

I will add on the fact that this is ONLY happening in the 2025 Illustrator.  I am curently running 29.6.1.  When I go back to the previous Illustrator version I was using, 2024, I don't have these issues at all using the same files.  I've compared settings and they are exactly the same.

Copperblue,

Many switch back and forth for different reasons.

You may ease the pain if you just toggle between GPU and CPU with Ctrl/Cmd+E (hold Ctrl or Cmd and press E).
